Something must have happened to my hard drive and without me wanting it to
XP was doing a consistency check and I found the this check had deleted
files.

Is there a way of stopping XP Pro from doing an error checking a hard drive
when it boots up.

Thanks

You need to find out why Error Checking is automatically occurring not stop
it
happening.

I would try HD Tune (freeware).
Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on C:\ under Drive letter
and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Also do a full surface scan with HD Tune.

Hope this helps.

Chkdsk.exe or Autochk.exe starts when you try to shut down or restart your
computer

Perform method three first to check for a damage hard drive or file system.

Hello, Thanks for the replies.

Chkdsk can do more damage if it encounters a problem with a hard drive.

I really would like to stop the Chkdsk all together if possible.

Thanks
