This error is extremely rare with Windows XP and there is virtually no
documentation available about it. What little information there is
mostly pertains to Windows 2000 and therefore is probably not relevant
to Windows XP.

Does the error message recur after you reboot the system? If so then
your only option would be to do a Repair Install of your Windows XP
which may or may not be possible using the Windows XP CD supplied by
Dell. Try booting with the CD and see what options are available to
you from the initial CD boot menu.

Good luck

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. This happens after the error check
on the drive is complete and the system goes to reboot. I then shut down the
computer and sart again and a screen comes up offering several ways to start
up again one of which is the last best configuration which I choose and the
system boots no problem. My understanding that this might be do to new
hardware of which I have two- one is a 160 gb western digital drive that I
connected as a slave and a printer hp photosmart 8250 which apperently has
some memory in it.

The reason for starting all this was the system seemed slow to me and I
was thinking of erasing my c-drive and reinstalling the system but then I saw
this information about erasing hurting the drive and that you could just do
some cleaning of errors that accumilate on the drive by using the tools the
xp already has.
So I can get my systemup and running again no problem but I don't know why
it happened in the first place.
