XP Stop Error

Farmdog

I have recently started getting the blue screen stop error as follows:

Kernal_Data_Inpage_Error

Stop: 0x0000007A (0xC03E19B8, 0xC000000E, 0xF866E50C, 0x100DD860)

Atapi.sys - Address F866E50C base at F8661000

Any idea what my issue is? Failing hard drive?

Thanks Gerry. At least I know I am not alone in my misery. One more symptom
that might provide a clue...this stop error seems to appear only when the
system goes from the normal display to the screen saver.

Your best bet is probably to take the computer to a small repair shop.

Is the error really:

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (not kernal)?

I would suspect bad RAM or a corrupted Page File.

Since it sounds like you can recreate with your screen saver
(recreating is good), start with the easy stuff first.

It is easy to create a new pagefile, but before you do make note of
the current settings because you are going to be changing them.
Unless you know more about managing memory that XP, the settings are
usually "System managed size".

1. Go to "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "System", "Advanced"
tab, in the "Performance"
section select "Settings", "Advanced" tab, in the "Virtual Memory"
make a note of the current
settings, section select "Change". Change the values to 0. Click OK,
etc.

2. Delete c:\pagefile.sys

If you cannot see the pagefile.sys, in Explorer, click View, Folder
Options, tick "Show hidden files and folders" and UNtick Hide
extensions for known file types. Now you should be able to find
pagefile.sys. Delete it.

3. Reboot Windows and verify pagefile.sys is gone.

4. Go to "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "System", "Advanced"
tab, in the "Performance"
section select "Settings", "Advanced" tab, in the "Virtual Memory"
section select "Change".
Change the values to System managed size or whatever it was to begin
with.

5. Reboot Windows

Double check the settings again and also check to be sure c:
\pagefile.sys now exists.

I would also run a check disk on the next reboot:

You can run memtest86+ from a bootable CD you have to create:

memtest86+ supercedes memtest86 and here is why:

The settings for a Screensaver are at Start, Control Panel, Display,
Screen Saver. How is the screen saver described? Are you using a system
provided or a third party screensaver?

There are options to choose another screensaver. Use the Scroll bar to
the right of the Description to make a change. One alternative is
"None". You can also change the period of delay before the Screensaver
is applied because of a period of inactivity to a maximum of 9,999
minutes. Note you need to click on the Apply button after making a
change. You may need to restart your computer.

I suggest you experiment with changes and see if it affects the timing
of the Stop Error.

I have played around with the screensaver, but I think it may have been a
coincendence. I have since found that the hard drive (or entire case
possibly) is running hot. All fans working. No recent software or hardware
changes except a new DSL modem.

If I keep the side panel off and a small 5" house fan blowing in the case,
no more problems and the hard drive runs at about 28 C. If I shut the fan
off and keep the side panel off, it warms up to around 35C but still runs.
When I put the side panel back on, it run for several hours and gradually
heats up to around 50C at which point the hard drive starts making clicking
noise and performance degrades. I have not let it continue to heat up until
I get the BSOD, but I think I have isolated the problem, but not the root
cause.

Any suggestions??
