How do I setup a microphone?

B

Bobby

Running XP SP2 and I want to setup a headset (including mic) to work with
Skype.

Can anyone tell me how to do this? My headset is connected to my PC but I
can't find the settings to adjust recording levels etc.

Tried Windows Help & Support but I would be just as well asking the freezer.

just plug in your headset and mic into their respective plugs.

to adjust the volume of your mic, you can:
-double click on the speaker icon on your system tray
-click options > properties > recording radio button
-make sure that the mic checkbox is checked
-click ok

your volume control when then shift to recording control and you can control
the volume of your mic from there.

i haven't tried skype yet, the reason why i can't help you much as regards
controlling the volume/recording levels using its interface. nevertheless,
you can control your volume/recording levels from the volume control on your
system tray, and specifically, recording levels as described above.

hope this helps.

regards!

Thanks Denis but I'm looking for the microphone setup wizard that I remember
running but can't find now. :-(

There isn't one in XP. Just double click on the sound icon in your sys
tray (next to the clock) and make sure that your microphone is there. If
not, click on File/Options and enable it for recording. Once it's there,
tick "mute" and Advanced and tick Microphone Boost for using it with
Skype or any other program like Yahoo Messenger.

Dear Bobby and Dennis

I have an HP Pavilion mx70 on which I'm running Windows XP. I want to use
the Sound Recorder program to record some voice-over samples, but am not
happy with the quality of the built-in microphone. I wondered whether either
of you have any recommendations about a good brand of microphone I could
purchase which I can use with this software?

Thanks

david,

the sound recorder that comes with xp may not even give you a good result,
as recording quality goes.

however there are commercial programs that would actually allow you to
record in CD quality. cool edit and sound forge are two of those that i am
familiar with.

using the built in mic and/or using a mic and just plugging it into the mic
jack may also not give you the sound quality that you are looking for.

what i would suggest, if it won't be too heavy on your budget would be, to
get a small amplifier where you can plug in everything, i.e., your mic, CD,
etc. then from that amplifier's "line out," connect the cable to your
puter's "line in" (instead of the mic jack). with this setup, the quality
of your recording will then depend now on your equipment (mic, amplifier,
etc.).

hope this helps.

regards!
