How Do I Set Up a VPN?

T

TC

I am trying to set up a VPN connection between my notebook computer and the
office. I found instructions on the Microsoft website (at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gomobile/vpns.asp), but
the last step is to provide a user name and password, and I have no idea
what user name / password it wants.

I already have a VPN connection on my desktop PC at home. For that
connection, I use a LinkSys VPN router. During the configuration of the
router, I never had to provide a user name / password.

Can anyone give me some straight talk about VPN? What, exactly, am I logging
into, and what user name / password do I use?

The request for username and password is coming from the office side of
the vpn. It needs to authenticate you. If you set this up yourself,
then you need to go to the office and add your username and password
with whatever software you are using. If you didn't set this up
yourself, then you need to talk to your office IT people.

Malke,

Thank you for the advice. The software in use, both here and in the office,
is Windows XP (Is there supposed to be some other software involved?). How
can I tell the Windows XP network at the office to accept my user name and
password when I try to VPN in? I already have a valid login for various
computers on the network, but none of those logins will complete the VPN
connection.

By the way, I didn't set up the office network, but I can make changes to
it. There are no IT people.

I did a quick Google for "vpn Windows XP" and here are some links which
I think will help you:

http://allserv.ugent.be/helpdesk/aansluiten/vpn/vpn-xpeng.html
http://rucs.rutgers.edu/vpn/vpn_files/jabbott/vpn_winxp.php3
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/ucs/vpn/vpnxp.html

These were just 3 out of about 109,000 links. I think you'll be able to
get your answers easily from here.

Good luck,

Malke
