How do I remove the HP printer icon from the systray?

I tried msconfig to check the startup but could not find any HP
programs to not auto start.

Can someone help me? Also I'd like to know how to get rid of all those
unused autostart enries.

Double click or right click the icon and see if you can find an option not
to load the icon in the tray.

The majority of the unused entries will have an entry in the following
registry key--delete the entries:
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Sharedtools/MSconfig/startupreg

Thanks.

It's a stupid HP photo printer icon that was not there before I
replaced my power supply. There seems to option to not load it.

I don't have a clue how to get at the regisrty though.

Go to Run on the start menu and type: regedit and click OK.
This will open the registry editor. You'll note that it displays folders;
however, these are registry keys.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Sharedtools/MSconfig/startupreg

In the left hand pane, click the + sign in front HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. This
will open another branch of the registry.

Go to the next key (Software) and click the + sign. Continue clicking the +
sign in front of each key listed above until you click the + sign in front
of startupreg. When this branch opens up, you will see registry keys in the
left pane for the disabled entries on the startup tab in msconfig. Right
click an entry you want to remove and select delete.

Since you are not familiar with the registry, do not delete anything else.
If you don't understand my instructions or what you are looking at doesn't
match my instructions, do nothing.

Thanks. It's the HP Photosmart program 7900 series that I don't even
use. I guess I could just remove the program, but I might need it
later so I will attempt to do what you suggested.

I managed to get to the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Sharedtools/MSconfig/startupreg

area. I found a whole bunch of program folders under the software
folder but then I found the Hewlett packard folder instead of the
Micorsoft folder. Then I got lost. I eventually found a startupreg
under the Microsfot folder but I stopped as I didn't know what to do
next.

Locating a key in the registry editor is the same as locating a folder in
Windows Explorer. You click the + to open up a branch and then go onto the
next folder (key). Once you reach the final key and click the +, in the
left hand pane will be keys that are listed in msconfig, startup folder as
disabled entries. You find the entry or entries you don't want and delete
them.

Correction:

As reads: keys that are listed in msconfig, startup folder

To read: keys that are listed in msconfig, startup tab

Thanks for the help. The startupreg folder subfolders don't seem to
matchup entirely with the msconfig startup tab entires. I can't fibnd
the HP photosmart program anywhere,

Is it safe to delete any of the startup entires anyways? I know I
should not delete anything with windows systems stuff though, but
logitech Yahoo messanger TRojan scanner and other junk I never use.
Can I just delete the folder there in the registry?

Anything listed under the startupreg key is an entry on the msconfig startup
tab that has already been disabled (there is no mark in the box preceding
the entry). If you still do not want these items to start at boot, you can
safely delete the items from under startupreg.

The above explanation to a previous answer pertains to the disabled entries
on the startup tab in msconfig--it has nothing to do with HP which I assume
is still being loaded at boot.

If HP is still loading, you need to find out where it is loading from.
Check the startup folder on the start menu and if you find an HP shortcut to
what you want to turn off, delete it. If you do not find anything, then
look for an HP entry in these registry run keys:

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
RunServicesOnce

7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
RunOnce\Setup

If you find a HP entry that corresponds to what you want to turn off, delete
it.

I'm still trying to find the entry to delete hp photosmart from the
systray.

I searched again using regedit and finally found some entires in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/hewlett packard/HPH05

It has an entry with the name HP Photosmart

From your instructions I do not think this is the area where I should
delete though.

You said if it is in the systray then it has to be somewhere
I looked again in:

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Sharedtools/MSconfig/startupreg

But you said that's where the unused entries are. I confirmed that by
checking the unchecked programs by running misconfig and checking the
startup tab. I will delete some of them later once I back up the
registry.

BTW, how do I backup the registry before I attempt to change it? If
need be, how do I restore it as well?

As to your last post, how do I go to check the startup folder on the
startup menu to find the program I want to delete?

Alas I looked in those 7 registry folders to no avail:

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

3.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

5.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
RunServicesOnce

7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
RunOnce\Setup

This last one I could not find setup folder under runonce.

I am at a lost right now.

It's probably starting and running as a service. Look in the the
Services Management Console for it.

I did find ou tit is the software for my printer so I need it, but I
don't need to see it in my systray. I have no idea how to find it as a
service.

Click on Start | Run and enter services.msc in the Run box. If you
are still having a hard time finding it get Autoruns from the Microsoft
site.
