Icon in systray

I have this utility Spampal that checks for spams. It used to appear in the
systray but recently is not. I need it to appear so that I can have access to
it when needed. It does appear in the start menu and when click to open it
says "spampal is already running in the systray" but I don't see it and have
no way of bringing it back up. It is working though. How do I get it to
appear? In msconfig it is checked to run and it does but once again I don't
see the Icon. Many thanks in advance.

You should contact the makers of Spampal for questions about their
software. One thing to think about before you contact them:

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

You could try disabling one or both of these services:
SSDP Discovery Service
UPnP Service

Do this from Start | Run | services.msc

The UPnP service has nothing to do with Plug and Play devices. Most systems
don't need it. The SSDP Discovery service works in concert with UPnP.

have you turned on the START menu properties option to allow hiding of tray icons.
if so, and you want some to hide then adjust each in the options.

what would I lose by disabling these two? Is it coming down to weighting what
is important to me now? I simply don't know what they do.

Gentlemen thanks for taking the time and of all your suggestions! The problem
is solved by logging off and logging back in of the profile. I have no idea
of the how and why of the situation. I would be interested to know though.
Any thought on that? Thanks again.

I see the situation is currently resolved. It is possible the situation
will re-occur so I am including this info in case.

Do you have a home network with UPnP devices? For most users you loose
nothing. Most don't have UPnP devices. Again this is not the same as a PnP
device which most users do have.

See this link for more info on those services.

Hi Chris, glad you solved the problem. I get it from time to time with
one of my systray icons too and I have a suspicion it is somehow
connected with having autologon enabled. . . When it happens (every few
months or so for me), I do as you did and log off and on again; this
seems to make the icon "stick" until the next time :)
