Our company requires three fields centered on the title page - Title,
subtitle, and date. The title and subtitle I can do with the autolayout
feature that allows clicking into the field to fill it in, but I can't figure
out how to make a date field like that.

Slide Masters contain Title, Text Box, Date, Footer, and Slide #
placeholders. As Troy mentioned you cannot add new ones, but you can use
the ones already built in. Not sure if this is version dependent (I tried
it on PPT 2003), but click "View", "Master", "Slide Master". Click the
Title Master slide thumbnail to access it. Right-click an empty area of the
slide and click "Master layout". Check the "Date" field and click "OK".
Now you can move it whereever you want.

Hopefully that will work for you! Holler back if you have
questions/problems.

View, Master, Title Master.
If that's grayed out, do View, Master, SlideMaster and then choose Insert, Title
Master.

Now choose the Date placeholder (lower left of the master slide). Move it to
where you want your date, format it to suit your needs.

Choose View, Headers and Footers. Make sure there's a check next to Date and
choose your date formatting options then click Apply to all.
