How do I create a hyperlink to a file without opening it?

I created a hyperlink in my Word document via a UNC path. The hyperlink works
fine in that it opens Explorer to the correct location but I would like the
hyperlink to point to a specific file but not open the file.

Any assistance would be appreciated, thanks.

Sorry, that can't be done. You can hyperlink to the folder that contains the
document, simply by editing the address in the link to end with the folder
name that precedes the filename. Clicking the link will open Explorer to
that folder, but there's no way to "select but not open" any specific file.
Including the filename in the link will open the file.
