How can I read the actual space on a DVD-R?

When I put a blank CD-R disc in my CD/DVD drive, I can right-click on
the drive in Explorer, select Properties, and it will show the actual
space in bytes available on the disc. However, when I put a blank DVD-R
disc in the drive, it always shows the space as 0 bytes. Neither disc
is formatted. How can I read the actual space on a DVD-R?

Use Nero.
A DVD-R normally has 4.7 GB free when new.

I understand that. A better question, I suppose, is: Why doesn't
Properties show actual space on a DVD-R, as it does on a CD-R?

Because XP only has a half hearted implentation of DVD functionality?
Maybe Vista will be better.

To simplify, because XP doesn't provide DVD burning capability and so
has no concept of "free space" on a DVD.
