dvd-r problem

Hi all,
I have not burned a dvd disc in a LONG time, but recently, I wanted to burn
my digital pics (about 2500 of them) to a dvd-r blank disc. I have tried
both Roxio Easy cd/dvd creator and also, just doing it in Windows explorer.
I have WinXP SP 2 and my burner is a Plextor px-712A. I have burned this
same media before (sony dvd-r) with no problem and I don't know why it won't
let me do it now. Windows wizard will let me add all the files to the
drive, but when I go to burn the disc, it says "there is no cd in the
drive." Roxio lets me set everything up and tells me "there are no
supported burners available" when I hit the burn button. Like I said, I've
used this exact media before. I notice in Windows explorer that when there
is no disc in the drive, it is listed as dvd-rw Drive (D) in the left pane,
but when I put a blank disc in, the screen refreshes and relist the drive
as CD Drive (D). I suspect this all has something to do with differences
between dvd-r and dvd+r, but how do I resolve the problem? Like I
mentioned, it worked a couple of times in the past. Any help is greatly
appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

I had the same trouble. I had added a CD-ROM drive that was incompatible
with the DVD drive.
Removing the CD player fixed the problem.

Native winxp will only burn CD, not DVD. I highly doubt it is a problem
with the minus R disks. Your burner will burn either format.

I've had the same thing happen with the Winxp burning option for a CD.
Hmm.. it used to work and now tells me I have no disk.

Not a big deal, I just use Nero.

This is worth a shot - highly regarded and free

If that doesn't work, ya got me. It's possible your drive went
defective.

That error message "there is no cd in the drive" usually means that the
drive is broken. Perhaps you should run the drive diagnostics before doing
anything else.

How old is the recorder?
My first Plextor recorder PX-716A failed completely on the 12th month.
Then I purchased a new PX-760A. -- failed after 5 months. The service
returned me a new device... 2 weeks ;-), the service returned me a new
device which failed after about 6 months. Recently they gave me a new one...
I hope it will last longer, who knows.
Excellent write quality and short life. That's my experience with Plextor
recorders. I use it rarely, but it stops working anyway.

The Plextor support team used to replay me with a maximum delay of 1 work
day. Support used to be good and kind. But that was in the past... Right now
I received one replay delayed for two weeks and the next delayed for one.

Good luck!

I'm pretty sure XP doesn't support writing to DVD,only CD

Try using CD/DVD speed and see if you can create a test disk.

Thanks for all replies! I downloaded a free trial version of Nero and it
worked like a charm. I don't understand why my drive will burn dvd's for
Nero, but not Roxio. However, bottom line is that I was successful in
burning all my digital pics to a dvd and I can move on with my life, ie,
format the hard drive and do a clean install.
Thanks again everyone,
Jim

I guess that Roxio uses it's own ASPI layer to burn disks. This may cause
problems with other programs, so I prefer not to use such programs. Nero and
Plextools relay on the built-in Windows interface for burning disks which is
better. They will also work with a 3rd party ASPI layer.

Here is a list of programs that install ASPI layer:
iTunes, Pinnacle, InterVideo, Sonic Solutions - MyDVD.
I think Roxio too.

Roxio and Nero don't live together very well. If you reload your
computer, put one or the other on it.

No to be contrary, but I think Nero uses it's own aspi layer.

XP itself does not use ASPI layers to access CD or DVD drives. However some
3rd party software does, but they don't always load the latest ASPI drivers,
and some will even overwrite later drivers with earlier ones.

See <http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm> for
access to the latest drivers.

They should work fine together but only if you have the latest ASPI layers.
