O.T. Nero, DVD/RW Question:

R

Robert

I am new at burning CD/DVD's and today after inserting a blank TDK,
DVD-R 16X disc I opened Nero and clicked DVD>Data>Format but it came
back with this message:

Operation not allowed on DVD-R sequencial recording media license
restriction.

Does this mean its already formatted?

I want to copy existing jpg files/folders onto disc and thought it
would be the same as a 3 1/2 inch drive but Nero seems complicated to
use and I could't understand how to do this.

Try this:
using windows explorer click once on the drive then right click, and choose
properties, then go to the recording tab and see if enable cd burning box is
checked if not check it and say ok, you should be able to burn cds/dvd/s
after this.

What version of Nero are you using, and what component of Nero are you
using - Express, burning-rom etc.

All you need do is start Nero Express and drag the files you want into the
window.

On the next screen check the "allow files to be added later" box, then burn.

Do some of the files happen to be copy protected?

The box is checked for "CD recording for this drive". However when I
installed this drive it wasn't digitally signed, I don't know if that
makes a difference or not. It does play DVD movies though.

Disk Management shows it as:
CD-ROM
DVD(D:)
The device manager shows it as:
DVD/CD-ROM- HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55L

cd-r do not need to be formatted, just use the drab and drop method to copy
files to it, just be sure to close the session when your done with all the
files to be copied.

CD and DVD discs don't work the same way as floppy discs or other types of
drive. You don't format either type of disc before using it [1].

Once you open Nero you get a screen with an area where you can add the files
that you want to burn to the disc. Once done, you slect 'burn' and you then
get the option to say whether you wish to add files later in another session
[2]. If you decline then you obviously can't add files later [3]. You then
burn all your selected files to the disc. It might appear daunting if you
are not familiar with the differences, but it really is quite simple once
you get the hang of it.

Blank DVD-Rs are cheap enough these days that you can afford to try it and
if you do screw it up, the most its cost you is a few pence.

[1] There are methods of writing to CD and DVD that do require the disc to
be formatted first, but plain Nero isn't one of them.

[2] Some DVD drives do not support the ability to view sessions other than
the first even though they are able to write them.

[3] Nero has a serious mis-feature that if you wish to add files later, you
*must* save the project contents *before* burning the disc. Unlike
competing products, Nero has no way of adding a subsequent session if the
project contents have not been saved.

I have no idea what version of Nero I have. When I click on Properties
it just says NeroStartSmart Essentials, it came with my LG drive.

I'm trying to use the photo/video but it just has video and super
video options, nothing about photos. It seems all this is able to do
is store data or videos and not pictures.

I keep seeing comments about a screen or window and I don't see a
screen or window. All I see is a sort of dialog box with options, none
of which fit my purpose. There was a selection screen that came up
when I initially opened Nero and I tried closing Nero to force it to
open again but it didn't. Perhaps that is what you are referring to?

None of the files are copy protected. I'm not even getting to that
stage as I can;t see this screen you're talking about.

Ok, following your directions I dragged over a folder with .jpg files,
then clicked next, and then burn and then got this error message:

Sorry, your complilation cannot be wrtten on this kind of disc. Please
insert a disc of the correct type or modify the settings of your
complilation to make it compatiable with the current disc.

I want to thank all of you for your helpful suggestions. I finally was
able to make Nero work and copied over 3 folders and verified that
they did indeed contain all the information in them. Now I just need
to do the rest. Although I noticed that there was a slight pause in
computer response after I was finished but all seems well
