How do I read available space on a DVD-R disc

When I have a blank CD-R disc in my CD/DVD drive, I can right-click on
the drive in Explorer, select Properties, and it will show the space
available on the disc. However, when I follow the same process with a
blank DVD-R disc in the drive, it always shows the space, both free and
used, as 0 bytes. How can I read the actual space on a DVD-R?
