Won't recognize blank discs

Does anyone have an idea why blank discs would not be recognized as being in
the drive? Using CD-R or DVD, blank media just doesn't seem to exist, the
drive either says 0 bytes used ) bytes free, or the other one says 'please
insert disc' when both should see a blank disc with loads of free space.

The drives are otherwise fine and play normally from written discs.

Thanks for your help...

Me too! Did this by any chance start happening after upgrading from XP SP1
to SP2? It happened to me, and I then was unable to write anything to a CD
from the CD-burning program because it saw my CD as not there or full or not
a writable disk (all untrue). I uninstalled SP2 and everything worked fine
again.
But then in Oct. I had to re-download SP2 since support for SP1 was ending,
and the problem started all over again.

I was given a couple of tips to try, but they didn't work. I really don't
want to have to my a new CD-RW drive, especially if that won't solve the
problem. Help, anyone???
