Home plugs

Is anyone using home plugs to network? I was considering recommending them as an option for a couple of people who are having wireless networking problems. I understand the basic idea, but I would be interested to know what's involved in setting them up ...is it as simple as plugging them into the power sockets and attaching network cables? Do they work reliably?

I've heard some really nightmare stories about getting them to work, although I've not used them myself. What sort of problems did they have with wireless access?
