HJSplit at http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/ looks good. I *think* it's
spyware-free.

Anybody here use it and have opinions on it?

Many thanks in advance.

I use it and it does it's job good. The only real drawback I can think of
(and I don't blame anyone who thinks I'm only whining about it) is the
maximum of 999 parts since it uses the extention part to number the files,
and it still uses the Microsoft guidelines to use only 3 characters

Thanks MK. I need to break up some large (5 - 10 GB) files to burn on to CD
so I won't require more than around 15 parts. :)

Hmmm...

Will you want to be able to read each individual CD in isolation?

That depends on the file type. If its an xxxx.mpg.001, xxxx.mpg.002 (or
avi), etc. then I believe I'd be able to by removing the 3 digit suffix.
Wouldn't work with an .exe file. However, in my case splitting the files is
for external storage purposes only so it doesn't matter if I can read each
CD. What is important is that I can join the split files at a later date.

OK.

It might be worth checking this though, before you commit to burning
and deleting.
My guess, which I am not in a position to verify atm, is that avi.001
will play having removed the 001 and running it through VirtualDub,
and that all subsequent avi files will not play.

I'd go for the versatility of a dedicated avi/mpg/whatever file
splitter but if you simply want back up then, yes, HJSplit is a good
piece of kit.

Out of curiousity, what dedicated avi/mpg file splitter would you recommend?

Thanks.

I don't have a recommendation; it's ages since I used one. But I would
definitely use one in preference to HJSplit if I were going to span a
movie over several CD's.
Even in the cases where your suggestion of removing the .xxx works,
you are still going to have to copy to the HD first...
