highlighting not saving in docx

When working with the docx format, I highlight a block of text and then exit
word. I open up the document again, highlight another block and close the
document. When I open the word again, the first, original block of text I
highlighted is no longer highlighted. How do I get all of the highlighting to
save?

This only happens with docx, not when I save a document as doc. I would just
save all of my docs in the old 97-03 format but I've noticed that my word is
a lot slower with opening up these formats and sometimes tends to freeze.

What are the exact steps and commands you are using to highlight the text?
