keep getting format docx

I save my document as a word doc and when i send my document as an
attachment, it is received as .docx instead of .doc. The person on the
receiving end is unable to open .docx and keeps asking me to save my document
as a word document. I am saving my document as a word doc but it continues to
be received as .docx
Thank you for your help

If you are using Word 2007, then .docx is the default file format. To save
in a format that can be opened in earlier versions without a convert, you
must explicitly choose to save in Word 97-2003 format.

Yep, Suzanna's got it right. Use the drop-down menu at the bottom and select
"Word 97 - 2003" format.

Try this:
Don't use the quick Send as Attachment feature set up in Word. Instead
go into to your email program and specifically attach the document.

I have changed the default "save as file type" format to Word 2003 in the
Word options (from the circle button), but when attaching a .doc file, it
still attaches as a .docx file. I have closed and re-opened Word, and the
setting is still showing as .doc as the default.

What else do I need to do to get a .doc file to attach as a .doc file?

Thanks.

If the document has been saved from Word, and you choose the option to
e-mail as attachment from Word, the format of the attachment will be the
same as the format of the saved document.
If the document has not been saved, the format of the attachment will
correspond to the setting in Word Options > Save > Save Files In This
Format - the default is docx.
If the Option does not behave correctly - see
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm then
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm. with
particular emphasis on the Data key in the registry.

Or you could simply save the document in whatever format you want from the
SaveAs dialog and close the file, then attach it from your e-mail
application.
