Hi there

i am new to this forum and the main reason for me signing up is to ask
the help of the knowledgeable people here, here goes......

I formatted my dell dimension 3000 4 weeks ago really just for the hell
of it and to improve its performsnce iv had it for about 4 years and i
thought a full MOT was in order, i mean how hard can it be (now you now
where i went wrong!!!!!)

i backed some files no probs wiped it formmatted it and used the CD
supplied by dell to reinstall XP home THIS TOOK 17 HOURS!!!!! but i
thought fair enough i then logged on and my computer went as fast as me
on sleeping pills i mean it took 5 mins to load solitaire for instance.
I then formatted for second time using the quick option ONLY 9 HOURS
THIS TIME hahaah.
i relised my mistake pretty quickly i had neglected to reinstall the
nessecary drivers. i went on ebay found an auction offering the
nesecary software for a small sum and have now loaded the needed
drivers, for instance i no longer have any yellow question marks on my
add and remove hardware screen BUT THE COMPUTER IS STILL VERY VERY VERY
SLOW if anyone has any ideas please help me as i am going crazy trying
to work out what is wriong with it.

thanking you in advance

If your computer (and Windows XP) is 4 years old then you probably did
not have Service Pack 2 included on the installation CD. That in
turns means that your computer was almost certainly infested with
spyware/trojans/viruses within approximately .000000001 seconds of
being connected to the Internet (well within a few minutes, anyway).

Go to one of the following free online scanning sites and check your
computer for infestations:
Bit Defender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Kaspersky Online Scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

If your machine is clean but is still running slow then look at the
items that are loading when the computer starts up. The Dell CD may
have loaded a lot of superfluous stuff that is just bogging down your
computer. Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the Startup tab.
Compare the listed items with the checklist at
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php to see what can
safely be removed or reconfigured.

Good luck

Try booting the computer into "Safe Mode with Networking" and see if
that will allow you to access the Internet.

To do this turn on the computer (or shut down and restart) and start
tapping the F8 key rapidly just as soon as the first information of
any kind shows on the screen. Keep tapping until the Windows XP
Startup Menu appears and choose "Safe Mode With Networking" from the
menu.

If you can access the Internet this way then the problem is most
likely being caused by some application program that is loaded during
a normal startup but not when starting in Safe Mode. Prime suspects
would be a 3rd party firewall (e.g. Zone Alarm) or some sort of
malware.

Post the results back here and we will proceed further.

Good luck

You say you can't connect to the internet, even though you have a good
signal? Have you tried clearing out your computer's cache of temporary
internet files and cookies? ( go to tools and select internet options select
delete temporay internet files - also delete all offline content - and then
select delete cookies. Then, close all your internet explorer windows and
restart your browser. )

If that doesn't work, try rebooting your system after that, run a Disk
Cleanup. That should clear up any extra cache your system may have not
cleared out when you deleted your files/cookies before the reboot.
( Get to Disk Cleanup by going to Start, All Programs, Accessories, then
look for System Tools)

Once you run the Disk Cleanup, try running a Disk Defragment and then
rebooting. Check your internet cable/connection and see if it's hooked up
correctly. ( Disk Defragment is located in the same place as Disk Cleanup
under System Tools under the Start Menu. )

Do other computers work with your wireless router as well?

It could be the router.

And is this the first connection the computer has made to the internet, as
the proxy or another setting could of changed?
