Help with Repair of XP

N

Noel S Pamfree

I am trying to repair a friend's laptop that seems to have a lot of the
basic xp files/drivers missing.

I put the CD in and boot from it, then choose R for repair and then 1<Enter>
to select the only operating system on it and log-on as administrator. All
this gives me is the C:\ prompt.

How do I get it to repair?

Man thanks,

Noel

Hello,

What you mean is to do a reinstall of Windows XP - which I personally do not
recommend.

In any case, you are accessing the Recovery Console by pressing R. The right
way is to press Enter, F8 and then R.

How to do a repair(reinstallation) of Windows XP (method 2)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/en-us

Method 2: Reinstall Windows XP by starting your computer from the Windows XP
CD
To reinstall Windows XP by starting your computer from the Windows XP CD,
follow these steps:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM
or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
2. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on the
screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

Note Your computer must be configured to start from the CD-ROM or
DVD-ROM drive. For more information about how to configure your computer to
start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, see your computer's documentation or
contact your computer manufacturer.
3. You receive the following message on the Welcome to Setup screen
that appears:
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run
on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press ENTER to set up Windows XP.
4. On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to
the license agreement.
5. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected
in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.
6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reinstall
Windows XP. After you repair Windows XP, you may have to reactivate your
copy of Windows XP.

I have discovered that if you want to repair XP you MUST NOT Choose 'R' for
repair!

How stupid!

You just press <ENTER> accept the licence agreement, then after selecting
your XP installation type R.

It's worth noting you lose SP2 and have to download all 66 updates!

Only 66? Gee, I've got 116 updates according to the number of
uninstall folders in the Windows folder.

The number of updates varies, depending for example, on what driver updates
apply to you, and which you choose to install.

I've got a similar problem as Noel but after running the repair the problem
still exists. Do I need to do a complete re-install of Windows? (I have XP
Pro)
Thanks,
Gordon
