Repair installation

T

Tri-Pacer

While attempting a repair of XP by booting from the CD-Rom and selecting the
repair option I am prompted for a password. I am the administrator of the
computer and have never set a password.

The computer in question gave warning of a failing hard disk. I backed all
the data to another HD using MS Backup. When attempting to boot from the new
HD I got an error message about missing files. Thinking the easiest route
would be to repair the installation I booted from the CD-ROM and got the
password prompt.

Any tips on how to proceed would be appreciated.

Thanks

Paul Anton

First off do not press R if you choose the other option it will look like you
are going to reformat but this is misleading you will have the option of a
repair much more on this here:

As far as the password goes-From the same website.

There is a bug in WinXP there prevents you from using Recovery Console

even though the right password is typed when prompted....

So, here's the trick.

2. Enable Administrator to Log On Automatically in Recovery Console

3. Reboot into WinXP.

4. Select Start | Run, then type regedit Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Setup
\RecoveryConsole Change the SecurityLevel DWORD value data to 1.

5. Reboot the PC.
