help with reinstalling wndows

Hi All,
I am about to reinstall Windows XP on my laptop but I'm not sure how to go
about it, I want a clean install. I was told that all I have to do is
put the 2 restore disks in and it works. I have a Asus laptop, I was going
ahead with that but when I found a disk has Driver & Utility written on
it. I was told the 2 recovery disks had the drivers on them. then I read
that I had to hit the F9 key on boot up.
Could someone please advise me.
thank you.

Please provide the PCs Manufacturer/Make/Model to help us better help you.

Manufacturer - Dell, Emachine, HP, Gateway, etc.
Make - Dimension, Pavilion, etc.
Model/Series - 9200C, 7125, etc.

Example: Dell Demension 9100C, HP Pavilion 7125

I have an Asus Laptop, Model A6Jc. I have put disk 1 in and that has wiped
(I think) the hard drive, all my data has gone and what I see is system
folders on the desktop, I was not asked for the second disk so would this
mean that Windows is reinstalled and the problem I had would be gone?. sorry
to be dumb but I've not done this before.
thank you Susan.

S

Susan

I just had a look and the same problem is on the laptop, the sound is like a
constant beep for instance like morse code, and I cannot type into any file
field, or into run, nowhere as what happens is a long line of periods i.e,
...................and it's impossible to get anywhere, same with I.E.7,
cannot type anything, or in google, just the dots appear. I was told I would
have to reinstall Windows, and that all I had to do was put disk one in and
follow the prompts. I had to keep hitting F9, I think that was the right key
but not sure, then I was asked if I wanted to format the HDD or the
partition, I chose the first HDD. I think I have just done a recovery of
Windows, but can't understand why the fault is still there, so I think I
need a clean install, but can I do it with recovery disks?.
Susan,

It's hard to say if your disk reinstalled the OS or not, it sounds as if it did,
however it may not have if the CD used is a "Support" disk and not a "Recovery"
disk. According to the manual for your laptop the "Support" CD does not include
the OS. There is also mention of pressing the ESC key during boot at the splash
screen (possibly the Asus logo screen) to get a menu of drives which you can
choose to boot from, one which may be a hidden recovery drive but I can't be
sure about that.

See page 36 for info about the "Support/Recovery" disks and page 26 for boot
options.
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/A6Jc/E2333_A6UKVRJ.pdf

Other than that I find little info on the Asus site on recovery.

S

Susan

Thanks Brian, I definitely have recover disks, I read the pages you
suggested but didn't make much sense to me. I just tried to boot up with the
first disk in the drive, and tapped the esc key that did bring up a
different option to what I've seen earlier. This is a blue dialogue box,
Says "Boot from the following boot devices, with 2 options, first one,
HDD:pM-ST988323A, underneath that CD/DVD PS-TSST corpCD/DVDW TS-L6 , I
arrowed down to the latter.Hit enter the next page has 4 options, first one
seems for me, MS DOS with CD ROM Support. the next page has me stumped,
There is a lot there, & at the top it says Transfer mode, number of drives
Ram drive, sector size, then copyright, mention bytes at the end, I have the
option to click Y so I do that and then all those little dots that appeared
when I had all my data & causing me grief run right across the screen.,
What if I format the whole C & D drives, do you think that would stop the
problem. Do these computers rely on Windows that is already installed in the
i386 folder and if I format everything (which I don't know how to do yet)
would it delete that folder and cause me not to be able to use my recovery
disks?
Sorry about the long post,
Susan.

Hi All,
I am about to reinstall Windows XP on my laptop

Why? It's hardly ever a good thing to do. Are you aware that doing so
will cause the loss of all your data (unless it's backed up to
external media) and all of your installed programs (which will have to
be reinstalled).

but I'm not sure how to go
about it, I want a clean install. I was told that all I have to do is

How to do this with recovery disks depends on the particular kind of
computer you have. It's best to check on the Asus web site or call
them for instructions.

Susan,

Stuck key on the keyboard? You mentioned a long line of >.............<
with a Morse code series of beeps. Sounds more like hardware issues than
software issues to me.
What does confuse me is that you are able to actually install software and
rebuild the system. Normally with a stuck key this won't be able to be
done.

Does the beeps happen after the boot-up of the computer without trying to
enter into any program?

If so you do have a hardware issue and it would be best to send the computer
to a reliable computer repair (Asus if still in warranty) for diagnosis and
repair. Most good mom & pop types of stores can do that work but I would
steer clear of the big box type of stores (best buy, staples, etc.)

S

Susan

Thank you for responding, The keys that don't work are on the laptop
keyboard, 2 of them but that happened weeks ago, I don't think they are
stuck, they just don't work. I bought an external keyboard and I use that. I
tried another keyboard to make sure it wasn't that. I thought this would be
an easy exercise, just pop disk 1 in then disk 2 and follow the prompts but
that doesn't work. I rang the local tech guy (who charges a lot), he told me
I had to get into the BIOS, and also had to keeping tapping a certain key, I
found F9 opened up a recovery page but that's where I was before and it just
takes me back to Windows, and it looks like a new screen with just the
windows folders on, my data has gone. Even Norton tried to install, like
when you get a new computer and free Norton for 3 Months. I would go ahead
with that (not so much Norton cause I like Avast), but before I type
anything in any field those darn long dots and the sound goes on with the
beeping.
Susan.

Susan, which 2 keys died on the laptop? I would suspect that the keyboard
on the laptop has shorted or been damaged and that is what is causing your
issue. Simply plugging in a USB keyboard does not turn off the laptop's
keyboard. If there is a hardware issue with the keyboard it may cause
exactly the symptoms you describe. Reinstalling Windows won't fix it.

S

Susan

Thanks again, one key is the l (L) can't remember the other one as it was a
few weeks ago. I rang a local tech guy and he said it probably is something
to do with the keys but he doesn't fix laptops and gave me the name of one
who does. This place charges $40 to look at it and hopefully diagnose the
problem. Seems clear I cannot fix this myself, unless there is some way of
uninstalling the keyboard on laptop, I mean is there somewhere I can go to
do that do you know.
Susan.

LVTravel

I know of no way to turn off the laptop's keyboard to enable the external
keyboard to be the only one available unless it can be done in the
computer's bios and normally that can't be done as it is considered a
necessary component.

If you remove the driver in Control Panel, it will only be reinstalled upon
the next boot-up so that won't help either.

Looks like you may have to spend the money to have it looked at as a
computer as old as this one is out of warranty (about 2005 or 2006 according
to the manual online.) The "fix," if the keyboard is the issue, is to
replace the built-in keyboard with another one. That may not be cost
effective. I do not know if this model will allow the internal keyboard to
be physically unhooked and left unhooked and use just the USB keyboard.
That will be a trial and error test.

Next is to determine if the laptop worth fixing. It is a number of year old
now and faster, better laptops are available for well under $1000 (stay away
from netbooks unless you examine all of the issues with them like no CD/DVD
drive.) The final determination needs to be yours after examining all the
options.

Is this because your XP and the Media P[layer does not recognize the DVD disk when
inserted? You already posted this and you were given bad advice to re-install your
OS. I posted a MS KB for a fix for this problem . Please go to your other post and
check. Please stay away from that 24hourhelpdesk forum which is nt a nesgroup but a
chat group

Again I will post the MS KB here for you again/ Let us know how you made out.I also
attached your posted issue below so as others can see it

Your post in the other group which you posted today

Hi, thank you for responding. The disk is a dvd , I tried a couple of other
DVD's music ones and got the same message which is;
windows Media Player cannot play DVD video, you might need to adjust your
Windows settings. Open disk display settings and try lowering your screen
resolution and colour. I also wanted to copy that movie for myself, it
belongs to a friend. But none of mine work either and Nero didn't work to
copy it.

If one of the keys is the L key, the period (.) is immediately below it. I
don't know the actual electronic code mappings for those two keys but it is
sounding more and more like a hardware issue or something is stuck behind
the keys.

Hi Peter,
Thank you, sorry for not coming back but I had to go to the hospital as I am
having surgery next Tuesday. I will take your advice and stay away from the
24 hour group. Someone was nasty to me anyway accusing me of stealing and
the DVD I was trying to copy was of a copy of a video of a friends 21st
birthday party, I was there and wanted a copy. I couldn't be bothered
explaining that.
BTW, I've had to take my laptop to a technician to be repaired as I gave up.
Turns out it was the laptop keys and by then the tech guy said they were all
bad, he is installing another keyboard for me, it's not very expensive
unless you think $90 is expensive. I hope it last another couple of years.
I was using the Desktop computer to try to burn that (private vudeo) DVD for
my friend and myself. I inserted a couple of others (bought and paid for) to
see if they would work and the same message appeared, Media Player is unable
to play the DVD video, you might need to adjust your diplay settings by
going to control panel. I did that but didn't change anything.
I've just had a look at the link you provided, but the problems listed there
are not the same as the error message I'm getting so should I download the
tool anyway?.

I phoned Asus and support told me I didn't even need the recovery disks,
they said to just hit the F9 key and that brought up a page with various
selections, for instance- do you really want to recover Windows, if so use
the up and down keys to select, there were four options, I forget them all
now but the Asus man told me to choose Windows XP with partition, even
though I didn't want the partition again, it's only 80 gigs 40 for c drive
and 40 for d drive. I've always though a partition was where Windows was ,
the i386 folder and when I looked before I wiped everything off by following
Asus instructions, I know that i386 folder was in C:drive. I just wanted
straight 80 gig C" drive. Not a partition. Now I realize I didn't need to
reinstall Windows but I was taking the advice of others. the laptop is at
the technicians getting a new keyboard installed. I just want to make sure I
have really done a clean install. I don't think so because what I did only
took a couple of minutes and from what I've read about reinstalling Windows
to make like new it takes hours, even days. I know I have work ahead of me
to reinstall all my software but before I do that I want to know I have a
new install of Windows. So confusing.

What does confuse me is that you are able to actually install
software and rebuild the system. Normally with a stuck key this
won't be able to be done.

Does the beeps happen after the boot-up of the computer without
trying to enter into any program?

If so you do have a hardware issue and it would be best to send the
computer to a reliable computer repair (Asus if still in warranty)
for diagnosis and repair. Most good mom & pop types of stores can
do that work but I would steer clear of the big box type of stores
(best buy, staples, etc.)

I've always though a partition was where Windows was ,
the i386 folder and when I looked before I wiped everything off by
following Asus instructions, I know that i386 folder was in C:drive. I just
wanted straight 80 gig C" drive. Not a partition.

Generally, restore disks don't allow you that level of control. They will
delete and recreate partitions based on a factory scheme.

There is no way around having at least one partition if you want to use the
drive at all. The partition is what is formatted and assigned a drive
letter.

You seem to be wanting one large partition, the full size of the drive.
Unfortunately, if you aren't asked about the layout during the install, the
manufacturer doesn't allow you to change it, and you can't merge or enlarge
the OS partition with Windows tools. You would have to use 3rd party
tools.
