HELP! Win32 issues?

S

simon.hawking

All of a sudden, XP seems to have lost access to some Win32 files.

Unable to access windows update - error 0x800A0046
I have no icons under Network connections - yet all connections work
fine.
No connection icons in the systray
Right clicking the systray, I see nothing listed when I customise
shown icons
Under services, if I try to view dependencies for any service I get
"WIN32: Access denied"

Nothing new loaded/removed or altered. Followed MS KB articls for the
update error, and the missing network options, Full AV scan, McAfee
online scan, Adaware and spybot scans all clean.

So I suspect a Win32 service is borked, but can't find anything
detailing these issues on the net.

Please help.

Thanks,
Simon..

Try doing a repair installation of Windows XP. Boot from WinXP CD-ROM and do
not select R for recovery console. Hit F8 to accept the License Agreement
then highlight the version of WinXP you have and press R for a recovery
installation.

These did not resolve the issues. When disabling startup items using
msconfig I get an error that Access is denied. You must be logged in
as an administraitor to perform this action. The account has full
admin control with no restrictions under group policy. When
restarting there is no tick in Load system services, instead the box
is green. I have not tried unchecking/highlighting this option as the
instructions say this will remove ny restore and last known good
points.

I have tried this in both normal and safemode with networking, other
admin accounts and also using last known good. Still I get the same
symptoms, now with the message from Network connections that "Network
connections service is not running or is corrupted. Restart this
service".

Also I cannot start COM+ service I get an unexpected termination, and
also windows firewall is disabled and all options greyed out.

The machine (laptop) is working normally, with the exception of not
being able to access the previously mentioned items.

It's a works machine, so do not have access to the XP Pro disk at this
time for an inplace reinstall/repair function.

I'm at a loss as to how this became corrupted, as no errors in event
viewer tally with the problems.

All sorted via a restore from a restore point windows created the day
things went belly up.

Still no idea how it happened, but very happy I now have admin control
back on all XP tasks.

Glad to hear and thanks for the resolution response. Good luck and enjoy.
