Generic Host Process for Win32 Services

Using XP Pro with SP2

When I reboot I've been getting an error message that says

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

and when I click on "more information" I see

szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : wuaueng.dll
szModVer : 7.0.6000.381 offset : 000c7ab2

I googled this and found a fix that worked for some people--didn't for me.

Tried doing windows update and couldn't get it to work, then found out the
win32 services thing is related to that.

(We also suddenly apparently have "no audio device" although the sound card
is shown as working properly but I have no idea if that's related, and I
think the WIN32 thing is more urgent.)

I'd appreciate any assistance.

Thanks,

Maggie

Hey, I've got the same thing except it was saying like this:
szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.5512 szModName : ntdll.dll
szModVer : 5.1.2600.5512 offset : 00010cae

The sound went off and I couldn't get on internet. The windows xp in a
coupple of minutes would change its look to a win 98 look.
Do you have Norton Internet Security 2008 (NIS) on your computer? I guess
the problem is caused by some virus that NIS can't detect. I was getting
errors that I need to activate my NIS in order to have protection.
What I did din't help pretty much. I'm still looking to find a solution to
this. If I find something I'll try not to forget and post it in this site.
Here's what I did. I had to install a new audio driver via device manager,
and the sound came back to life. Then I uninstalled the NIS and reinstalled
it back on. After this I got my connecting with internet fixed by
reinstalling the driver for the ethernet card. It took a while and I'm still
having that message popping up when I log in into Windows, but it behave
better now. I don't suggest you to do the same, because I don't know what can
happen with your computer. Oh, and I guess it's also a side effect of the
games I used to play. I've uninstalled'em all and it's better...
