"generic host process for win32 services" rpcrt4.dll

C

cqpanis3

Hi. This problem has me stumped for months now. I'm trying to deploy
Spiceworks in our network but whenever it starts scanning for my laptop, I
get this:

""Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and
needs to close."

---Error signature---
szAppName: svchost.exe szAppVer: 5.1.2600.5512 szModName: rpcrt4.dll
szModVer: 5.1.2600.5512 offset: 0007c471

After clicking Send Error Report button (or Do Not Send), the system will do
a force shutdown (NTAuth).

Can anyone point me to the right direction for troubleshooting and rooting
the cause of the error?

I'm using Windows XP Professional, which I recently updated with SP3. Even
on SP2, the same problem existed.

Thanks a bunch.

Please post a complete copy of the Error Report from Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

You might check for other error reports occuring about the same time.

Is the DCOM Server Process Launcher SytartUp type set to
automatic? -Start, Control Panel, Administraive Tools, Services and
right click on DCOM Server Process Launcher and select Properties. Has
the service started?

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry, thanks for the reply.

I've already subscribed to Spiceworks' support and I have posted this
problem last December (2007). The reason I posted it here is because I'm
thinking that it is not a Spicework-specific problem. I'm guessing also that
it has something to do with WMI (I opened a separate thread for this one -
"WMIDiag Errors").

DCOM Server Process Launcher is started and configured to automatically
startup, by the way.

Thanks again.

Run your AV - see if anything comes up .

Can you you post the complete copy of the Error Report?

I have looked at your other thread. The log is very complicated. I
noticed the references to DCOM.

What make is the computer? What version of Windows XP is involved?

I could not find your question in the Spiceworks forum. Can you provide
a link?

I found this about WMI

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 640m laptop with Windows XP Professional SP3 (same
problem existed while I was in SP2 a few days back).

Here's the link to the Spiceworks thread I opened:
