Help! 2KAS won't boot after SP install

M

Hello,

We have a Dell PowerEdge 500SC that came preinstalled with Windows 2000
Advanced Server SP2. (1.3 GHz, 512MB RAM).

I want to get the server patched and updated for the obvious security
purposes.

Using Windows Update, I ran the "Express SP4 installation". All seemed to
go well; however, afterwards the machine will not boot successfully--no
matter what I try. I have to reboot into safe mode and uninstall SP4 in
order to get the server to boot again.

I then tried with SP3--and got the exact same result. I am struggling to
find documentation out there that will tell me what I'm not doing correctly
to properly apply Service Packs to our 2000 Advanced Server, and no luck.

How can I get these service packs installed? Is there good documentation I
can read somewhere?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Mike

Hello,

If your system will start in Safe Mode after installing SP4, then I
recommend that you use standard troubleshooting to narrow down where the
issue is coming from. The following article will help you...

Mike,

I am having the *EXACT* same problem, and it's very frustrating. I'm
also running on a Dell Poweredge 500SC, 1.3Ghz, 512MB RAM -- the only
difference is that it's running Windows 2000 Server SP2 (not Advanced
Server). I also had the same problem with the SP3 install just as you
did.

I initially thought it might be due to having Norton Anti-virus
running during the SP install, but I elminated that variable to no
avail.

Since very few other people have been having this same problem, I feel
that it might be linked to our specific configuration.

Let me know what you've tried, and please let me know if you're able
to solve this.

Thanks,
Sachin
