headphones not working

Hello,
I have the Soundblaster Live sound card and it works
fine. My problem is that when I try to plug in my
headphones in my cd rom, I have no audio except when I
plug them into the back.. I went to device manager and
reconfigured but can't get it to work. Is the only way I
can use my headphones is to unplug my speakers in the
back and plug headphone in back?

As I understand it:

1. If you play an audio CD, you should get signal from the CDROM. This
does not go through the sound card. Assuming, of course, the volume control
on the CD is not all the way down. If you get no signal in this case, the
problem is with the CD drive.

2. If your audio originates from a data CD or any other source (streaming
radio, etc.) I would not expect the audio signal to come from the sound
card to the CDROM.

3. Suggest you get a set of speakers that have a headphone jack
conveniently on the front.

.
Myron,

You got me to thinking and I found the problem. My sound
card came with a connection for audio output from my cd
rom that i didn't hook up. Thanks buddy

The headphone jack on your cd rom drive will only work when you are
playing an audio cd in that drive. It has nothing to do with windows or
your sound card whatsoever.

What is happening is normal. Nothing is wrong with your setup at all.
You just have to plug your headphones into your sound card when you want
to listen to music or sounds from your pc.

This is probably because the CD is set to play audio in Digital mode -
Media player will set up to use that to support its own equaliser and
effects. That means that the information is being extracted as if it
was data, and not going through the drive's DAC to give an analog signal
to the headphones. You can disable digital CD audio in the drive's
Properties page in Device Manager
