Having trouble setting right margins in Word

G

Guest

I have tried Page Setup, horizontal ruler with mouse dragging,
Tools/Options/View/Print and Web Options. None are working. The right
margin stays at 7.5" and I want it at 8.00"

Does this occur in only one particular document? If yes, then open the
document, and click on Format | Columns | One | Apply to: Whole document
| OK. Even if "One" already appears to be selected, click on it anyway.

Or does this occur in all new documents? If yes, then locate and open
your Normal.dot file as described in Method 1 in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm . Click on
Format | Columns | One | Apply to: Whole document | OK. Even if "One"
already appears to be selected, click on it anyway. Type a character or
two and delete what you just typed. Save the Normal.dot file and close it.

Gar,

Your suggestion did not work. It is only on this document. I have now
copied the 95 page document and used Paste Special/Unformatted Text. I lose
tables and other formatting, but I have the correct margins.

Word seems to have these intransigent tendencies sometimes, IMHO. It thinks
it needs to correct the formatter of the document.

What you previously described is now a well-known bug: Text does not reflow
when changes to the right margin are made.

Instead of reformatting the document, did you try going to Format/Columns,
clicking "One" in the Presets at the top as Garfield suggested? Note that
even though "1" may appear in the "Number of columns" you still need to
click "One" in the Presets at the top.

What you are really looking for is the check in the "Equal Column Width"
option at the bottom. With only one column selected it's disabled but when
you click "One" in the Presets the option is selected. It's the Equal Column
Width option that is not allowing the text to automatically reflow to the
new margin settings. Instead, it's maintaining the column width you see in
the Columns dialog box.

I'm 99% certain this is the solution to the issue you are encountering. I've
seen this behavior numerous times and found the solution to the issue. :)

With the Equal Column Width box greyed out, I am unable to remove the
checkmark. I changed to 2 columns, unchecked, then went back to 1 column,
which automatically checked the box for equal column width. No change,
reflow does not happen.

It should be checked - that's what you want. Did you make sure the "Apply
to" option indicated "Whole Document"? (Sorry, I didn't note this before.)

I followed your instructions. The column width is unmovable at 6.75". I
applied it to the whole document. It still did not make any difference in
the document. I had done this prior to my last post, and did it again prior
to this post.

If you'd like to email me the document, or a portion of it that exhibits the
behavior, I'll take a look at it for you. Remove NoSpam4Me to obtain a valid
email address: (e-mail address removed)

Also, if you could use the subject, "Sample file from newsgroups" that would
help. I get so much spam these days I might miss it. :)

As noted, you need to remove "NoSpam4Me" from the email address I provided
in order to obtain a valid email address. :)

I realize that might sound a bit cryptic but email addresses are harvested
from newsgroup posts and I get enough spam as it is...

Beth,

Are you waiting for me? I have lost track of where we are. I had to get my
report out and could not spend the time needed. I have a little more time
now.

I'm still happy to take a look at it if you want to email it to me. :)

Remove "NoSpam4Me" from (e-mail address removed) and please use the Subject
"Sample file from newsgroup" to make sure I don't miss it due to the amount
of spam I get.

:) I just solved my issue. Here is what I did.

I found the 1033 file and opened the Normal template. I then changed the
template document to include the things I wanted including margins. I saved
it as a new template and closed it without closing Word. I chose
Tools/Templates and Add-Ins/Organizer. I closed the Normal template that was
in the box. I then chose the new template in the left box, and my document
in the right hand box.

I then chose the formatting that I wanted from the new template and copied
it into my document, closed both documents, answering Yes to the dialogue box
asking if I wanted to change the formatting of my document. It fixed my
document.

Thanks, Beth, for your help. You are soooo smart!

I'm glad to hear you have the problem resolved. I appreciate the compliment
but I can't say I did anything. <grin>

If the issues you found were in your Normal template then I suspect it will
continue to occur. My offer still stands on taking a look at whatever for
you so you don't encounter the margins issue again.
