Odd view in Word 2003

When I open Word 2003 and a new blank document appears, it displays in
Print Layout View and Page Width, which is how I have always seen it
open. The document has my default margins: 1 inch top & bottom; 1.25
inch left and right.

The horizontal ruler shows white space starting at the left margin
indicator and going for 6 inches, and shaded spaces to the left and
right of the margins showing an inch and a quarter. This, too, is how
it's always been.

What's different now is the vertical ruler. This starts at the top of
the page and shows white all the way from 0 through 9. That is, the
display doesn't show the top and bottom margin area of the page. There's
no shaded part of the vertical ruler, and the page display "looks like"
it is 8.5 inches wide and 9 inches high.

If I View > Headers and Footers and then close the Header and Footer
toolbar, the vertical ruler and the page display look they they used to:
the ruler has a 1-inch shaded area at the top and bottom, and now the
page display looks like 8.5 x 11.

I don't recall ever having to open/close the Header and Footer toolbar
to get this view. Am I simply mis-remembering, or has something changed
(possibly related to the install of WinXP SP3)?

You have inadvertantly hidden "white space" at the top and bottom of pages.
To hide that "white space," place the cursor in the small gray space between
the end of a page and the begining of the next page. There, you will see the
cursor change into two white open boxes with arrows pointing towards each
other and the help text states "Hide White Space". If you click, Word hides
the the header/footer all together (Whether the header/footer contain text or
not is irrelevant, this is why I quoted "White Sopace" above). To get it
back, reposition the cursor betwen two pages (or at the top of the first
page, or the end of the last page), when the help text shows "Show White
Space," click.

Thanks. That was it.
