Hello: I went to http://skp.mvps.org/how/install.htm and downloaded the
Handout Wizard. When I try to follow the instructions for a) and b)

a) Click on Tools | Add-ins to bring up the add-ins window.

b) Click on Add to bring up the 'Add New PowerPoint Add-in' dialog box.
Navigate to the folder where Handout Wizard files were installed and select
the Add-in file (HOW.ppa) and click on OK.

I encounter a problem - all works well up to the point where I click on Add
to bring up the Add New PPT Add-in" and then I don't see anything that I can
add. I tried navigating to where the installed file is but I can't see it
from inside this dialog box.

I am very curious to try this new feature to create better handouts and
would appreciate any help. I have Windows XP and PPT 2003.

Many thanks.

According to the instrux, you need to download HOWSETUP.EXE
Then doubleclick it to run the program.
I'm guessing that this unpacks the files you need into the chosen directory, so
only after running it should you start PPT and proceed with the steps you've
listed below.

Make sense?

Hi Steve: I downloaded the HOWSETUP.EXE and double clicked on the program. I
followed the instructions for installing it and then when I get to the
PowerPoint and select, Tools, Add-in, and Add the New PPT Add-ins, I can't go
any further. It doesn't allow me to "see" the file in order to add it. It
doesn't even allow me to change the "Files of type", i.e. it shows only
"PowerPoint Add-In" which is what I need anyway, but I thought perhaps
changing this would allow me to add this particular file -- what you said
makes sense, but it's not working. Don't know what else I need to do. Very
frustrating. I have a hunch this is a very cool add-in.

Thanks.

OK, one other thought:

Normally when you go to add a new add-in, PPT insists on taking you to a folder of
its own choosing. You always need to browse to the folder where you installed the
addin first, then pick the addin.

Might that be the problem?

Hi Steve: The problem is that I am unable to browse to the folder where it
is. I have it saved on the desktop. But when I click the Add the New PPT
Add-ins, it is not allowing me to view the desktop where the file is. Very
odd!

Odd indeed. Here, Desktop is in its usual place at the top of the file list in thethe
browse box.

Where WILL it let you browse? Create a folder someplace accessible, rerun the installer
and have it put the files there instead.

Hi again Steve. I tried to save it elsewhere and it didn't help. I then ran
the exe file and installed it in Program Files, Shyam Pillai. So when I went
to tools and clicked the add-in, I browsed until I found it in Program File,
Handout Wizard. There I could see a) Layout Templates and b) HOW - I
double clicked on the HOW to add it but the instant I do that, I am taken
right out to the blank Add-in box again and have to restart.

Thank you for staying with this. I hope this wizard is worth the trouble!

Thanks.

In other words, nothing gets added to the list in the Add-in box?
Doublecheck your macro security then. It must be set to medium or low.

Also, are you certain that VBA is installed?
Press ALT+F11 ... does that open up a new programming window in PPT?
If not, that may be the problem.

Hi Steve: Thanks for your response. I tried Alt and F11 and I do get the
VBA...

I wanted to follow your other recommendation about checking the macro
security setting but I am afraid that we are now entering an arena that is
beyond my technical know-how ... how do I do accomplish this step?

Many thanks.

No worries. It's quite simple:

From the main menu bar: Tools, Macro, Security
On the Security Level tab, take note of current setting, then choose Medium or Low
On the Trusted Sources tab, put a check next to "Trust all installed addins ..."

Click OK

Restart PowerPoint
See if the addin now works.

Whether it does or not, use the same procedure above to reset security back to its previous
settings
