I have just bought an ATI radeon 9800SE graphics card 128MB (AGP) but when i start up the PC, my monitor's display is lots of flashing colours.
Previously, I had an ATI radeon 7000 series (64MB) and this is fine when i replace the 9800SE and put it back in the AGP slot.
My monitor is a HP vs19e.
My motherboard is an Asrock K7VT4A+.
My processor is a Sempron 2400 AMD
My power supply is a 450 watt XLQ Gold-tek.

I've tried removing the old radeon 7000 series in device manager but everytime i try to boot up with the radeon 9800SE, the screen is impossible to read.

Any ideas ???

Flashing colours?

sounds like faulty drivers on your card, or even (sadly) a busted card :(....

What colours are they? My partners pc had a similar problem about 2 weeks ago, by the sound of it.

How far can you get? Can you even navigate around windows, or get to the welcome screen?

Hi !
It's all sorts of colours. It looks like the monitor can't display the graphics properly but the monitor is only 1 year old and as i say it's fine with the old graphics card.
I can sort of get in windows but it's difficult to read anything as the screen is flashing away and it's very blurred.
I did at one point manage to install the software for the radeon 9800SE from the disk but it still has the display problems when i try and boot it up.
It may be the card - i got it off eBay.
Is there anything in BIOS i would need to change ?

Okay,

It may be that it isn't seated properly. Or, when you put it in, something else was pushed out.

I'll look up your problem, maybe we can save it without you spending anymore money :)

Ebay you say? Second hand? a little dodgy in my books... contact the bloke you got it off, and tell him what it is doing to your computer :D

Yes, i've still got the old one and that works fine.
The new one though is still not working right.
You may be right about the card !

In that case, its almost certainly the card.

Contact the person you bought it from. See if you can return it :thumb:

If not, come back here and we'll find you a new AGP card :D.

Hi again !

I'm going to send him the card back - he was fine about it.
Thanks for your interest.
Any sugestions for a decent cheapish graphics card for my system ?
I'm not really into the start of the art gaming thing. Just need something a bit better than the 64MB card i've got now.

I used to have an ATI 9800SE AIW about three years ago, its not a bad card tbh, just dont expect to play games on high settings. But saying that, you did say your no a gamer so you will be fine. :)
