GMAIL like label

How can I simulate how GMAIL uses Labeling?

For example - I can set up a Label that is sort of a filter - such as
Anything that has the word SQL2005 or from or other, will be applied to
label. I give the label a name such as SQL2005 - and when I click on it,
all items in my Inbox that meet this criteria will show up in one big list.
Thus allowing me to say select all, "delete".

you can apply labels using views or rules and then show only items with that
label. You can also do the same with custom views and rules an not apply
labels. In your example, assuming you didn't want to review each message
before deleting, you could run rules now on the folder and move the items
meeting your criteria to the deleted folder.
