document. Why? I have not knowingly changed anything in the template.

Thank you. I have a similar problem that when I open some of my templates I
get a message that the template itself is open and do I wish to open the new
file in read only. I click cancel and the file ipens regularly. Is this a
different problem or an offshoot of the one in the article of the link?

It sounds like a different problem, but there isn't enough information here
to be sure.

When you say you "open some of my templates", do you mean opening the
template itself (either in the File > Open dialog or by right-clicking the
template's icon and choosing Open instead of New)? Or do you mean you're
opening a document based on the template?

This sort of behavior isn't native to Word, so I'm wondering whether the
templates might have AutoOpen or Document_Open macros, or possibly an
AutoExec macro. Are these templates you created yourself, or ones that
someone else supplied?

Thank you. The template is my own and I am trying to open a document based on
the template. There are no AutoOpen macros in it. Yet I often get a can't
open macro because it is supposedly already open. The template is on the
server but no one else should be opening it, although some will also be
running documents from the template.

You and others should be able to open multiple simultaneous documents
based on the same template. The only restriction should be that at
most one user at a time can open the template itself.

Possibly something has gone wrong in the mechanism that controls
Word's access to the file; see if
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm helps at all.
Otherwise, it might be a network problem -- try making a copy of the
template in your local Templates folder to see if that works.
