getting rid of IE

Okay, heres the deal...IE (internet explorer) has been giving me nothing but
problems since the day I've started using the internet. I use Firefox instead
of it because it doesn't suck! IE has so many pop-ups for no reason, and
errors and such. Basically, I want it off my computer. I know this is
possible, because a friend of mine is running Windows XP Home SP2 and he got
rid of IE. I dont mean he doesn't use it, I mean it's not on his computer
anywhere. We don't know how it happened but it did. So yeah I want it off.
Every time I delete it, it comes right back in a matter of seconds, and it
isn't shown in the "Add/Remove Programs" list. How would I go about doing
this? I know Firefox is my default browser, I haven't used IE in months, yet
it still has errors and pop-ups. Please help me I can't take it anymore...I
might as well switch to Linux...

this will make you happier. sorry all the ie lovers out there.

try the mozilla forums and search for removing ie .i have
seen many threads on it. but if you remove ie then you have
to manually search for windows updates .and of course all
the security holes are because ie and you windows explorer
are the same thing.

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=38
and you probably have already run spybot safer-networking.org
and
ad-aware se 1.5 from lavasoftusa.com
free

Not so -- Windows has automatic updates built-in to XP. No need to
browse to Microsoft's web site at all -- it's just a common myth.

Go the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select the
Add/Remove Windows Components, and you should see Internet Explorer in
the list of components. Uncheck the box to remove it.

It's a waste of time bothering the 'IE Sucks' or 'Windows Sucks' crowd with
facts.

Just take no notice.

All it does is remove the icon for it.

The actual program will still be there in Program FIles\Internet
Explorer

Most of it though is files that are held elsewhere and used extensively
elsewhere in the system and should be left alone - just don't use it if
you don't like it

Gee, the last time you posted this BS you were foxy lady. I guess you have
conflicted identity. You found the solution to your problem in your last
sentence. Welcome to Linux and PLEASE, don't pretend to still use XP and
TROLL this newsgroup again. And don't let the door hit your ass on the way
out the door.

If what you want to do is to slim down Windows to its essential
components (you decide whether this includes IE or not), check this
http://nuhi.msfn.org/nlite.html
This NG being a MS dedicated NG, whatever the merits of your
"critiscism", this is not the place to vent it.

I appologize for any mis-understanding, but I have no idea who foxy lady is,
and this is the first time I have ever even gone to this website/community. I
have nothing against XP, I love it, but I never use IE, yet I still have
problems with pop-ups and all, and it just happened recently. Again I am
sorry, I don't want to start a controversy.

Then don't use IE.

IE is now melded into the warp and woof of XP and cannot be fully
eradicated.

If you're using Firefox and still having problems with IE, you've got
malware on your machine that is invoking IE. The fix is to get rid of the
trojans, spyware, viruses, and such that are causing the problem, not IE.

How shall I go about doing that? I use 3 anti-virus programs and 2 spy-ware
programs. Whenever I do find something though, it just comes back, so Im
thinking there is a main file somewhere that is hiding from me, and it keeps
re-producing all these other files. If I can fix that then it will solve my
problem

I am not sure, because it was a time ago, i read that changing the name of
the folder where internet explorer runs from will do the job, and it will
not run the browser if set as default, but some funtions for windows
stability may be under iexplore process and not sure about consecuences.
I use both browsers, and lynx for ms-dos, unix look like,
I like firefox mozilla tabs to have all those pages loaded under the same
instance, but internet explorer has better options to set and as part of the
basic operating system it will be less buggy than any other browser.
I sujest, leave your pre-concepts away and think slowly and freely.

Here are malware removal instructions. It is crucial that you run all
scans in Safe Mode with updated tools. It is not a good idea to have
all three of your antivirus programs running at the same time; that
could certainly be causing problems. Since you didn't mention the names
of the two anti-spyware programs you have, I can't give you an answer
about them. However, you should check on the Spywarewarrior link below
to make sure they are not rogue betrayalware.

1) Scan in Safe Mode with current version (not earlier than 2003)
antivirus using updated definitions.

2) Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware. These
programs are free, so use them both since they complement each other.
There is a new version of CWShredder from Intermute. I would not
install the other Intermute programs, however. Alternately, there are
CoolWebSearch malware removal steps at SilentRunners.

Be sure to update these programs before running, and it is a good idea
to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode. Make sure you are able to see
all hidden files and extensions (View tab in Folder Options).

HijackThis is an excellent tool to discover and disable hijackers, but
it requires expert skill. See below for HijackThis links. A combination
of HijackThis and About:Buster works well in removing the About:Blank
homepage hijacker. Again, this is an expert tool and novices should get
help with it.

3) If you are running Windows ME or XP, you should disable/enable System
Restore because malware will be in the Restore Points. With ME, you
must disable System Restore completely. With XP, you can delete all but
the most recent (presumably clean) System Restore point from the More
Options section of Disk Cleanup (Run>cleanmgr).

4) Make sure you've visited Windows Update and applied all security
patches. Do not install driver updates from Windows Update.

5) Run a firewall.

XP-Lite has provisions to completely uninstall Internet Explorer.
But it's not freeware, feature only available in purchased version.
