Getting any scanner to work under Vista.

TWAIN is a standard -- Microsoft can and does support it.
Including drivers does not implicate tying.

Of course, I'm sure all you non-lawyers know better than me.

This is a Windows technical message board, not a court room. You
asked a question, I gave an answer. Don't like my answer? That's
fine. However, I ask that you try not to "teach" me technical theory
and I likewise will not try to "teach" or "preach" you law. Fair
enough?

Microsoft must carefully decide what and what not to include into their
OS.
My guess with Vuescan (OK, more then a guess since I've used it as well)
is
that it's more then driver support, but there are actually TWAIN pieces
driving your scanner. If Microsoft universally supports 700+ scanners,
what happens to Vuescan?
Answer: Law suit. One does not have to be a lawyer to see the
possiblites.

No, one only has to be a lawyer to see the realistic possibilities.

More than fair. I expected a technical discussion here, which is why
I posted about scanner drivers in the first place. If I was a
computer expert, I wouldn't have to ask but, because I'm not, I depend
on the greater technical expertise of the people who post here. I did
not expect anyone trying to lecture me (incorrectly) on the legal
ramifications of including device drivers.

I tried the Deskscan 2.9 and it still won't work. I have the scanner hooked
up via usb whereas Deskscan 2.9 insists upon using SCSI. I can see the
scanner in the imaging devices section of the device manager, but can't use
Deskscan, nor Windows Fax and Scan.

I can see the scanner from the control panel under scanners and cameras.
When I look at the properties, it says HP ScanJet 6200C, Manufacturer
Hamrick Software, Model HP ScanJet 6200C, On Port \\.\Usbscan0, and Status
Unavailable. When I look at the Scan Profiles it says "No scanners were
detected. If a scanner is installed, make sure that it is powered on and
connected to the computer, and then try again. ....."

I'm not complaining, I can still use the scanner with VueScan, which does
all and more than Deskscan 2.9 or my old program, PrescisionScan Pro, ever
did. I don't feel like inserting a SCSI card just to try to see if
Deskscan will work. I can also dual-boot into XP Pro where the scanner
works natively.

I just wish HP was more timely in releasing drivers for their hardware. I
have a Laserjet 1200, Photosmart D5160, and networked Officejet 7410 that
only function marginally and also need my XP Pro/boot in order to fully
function. :-(

The problem with scanner is that the vendor needs to support Vista drivers.
Scanner and digicam drivers are providing two kinds of interfaces: a TWAIN
interface (that can be used from some Graphic programs) and a WIA interface
(that will be used from Windows Vista). Because Microsoft has changed
something internally in the services - scanner drivers must be written for
Windows Vista - WIndows XP drivers won't suite.

Windows XP drivers may be installed and will be shown in control panel in
the scanner windows - but the scanner won't work. In best case the
Twain-interface supported by the driver will be suitable and you can use
graphic programs to scan. Unfortunately HP decided not to support "older
products" with Vista drivers. If you are in a

So try to search the HP site for a vista driver. Here is a list of supported
and unsupported HP scanners
http://www.planetamd64.com/lofiversion/index.php/t14562-100.html

I'm also in a situation that my hp scanner won't work with vista - and HP
declared that no driver will be available for "old products". The odd thing
at all is, that HP has been informed about that issue since Windows Server
2003 (that means, the new requirements for WIA driver is known approximately
since 2002). I decided not to buy any HP product in the future (just bought
two printers and DVD burners from competing vendors).

I suspect part of the problem is my non-standard SCSI interface.  I'm using
a USB to SCSI adapter made by Microtech.

I'd missed that when I first read your initial message. Sorry about that.

All that I've seen of USB to XXX adapters make me very doubtful. I have a USB
to serial cable for my Nokia phone and nothing I've done, including tracking
down the chip inside it and getting a driver for it from the SIL website, hasa
made it work. (I'm just about to try it on VISTA to see if it can do what XP
could not <g>)

And in the Compuserve forums where I do support, time and time again we get
people who can't get USB to Serial and USB to Parallel adapters working.

If you were not on a laptop (I think I read correctly that you still are) then
the simplest answer would be to get a PCI scsi controller -- my Adaptec 19160,
which is no longer in production but might be around in the discount places or
on eBay, works fine -- VISTA picked it up immediately.

One thing you might try is to go into Services and turn off Windows Image
Acquisition (WIA) and reboot to see if it was that being preferred by MS that
was stopping the TWAIN from working?

Another thing to try is to download the ASPI file set from Adaptec and install
those -- and it includes a utility aspichk that tells you what versions you
have and where they are.

See my reply to PTravel on this.

Vuescan software (from Hamirck) works perfectly under Vista with both my USB
to SCSI adapter and my HP scanner. Unfortunately, nothing else does.

It worked fine on my XP Pro machine, which this new laptop replaced.
According to Vista Device Manager, the USB to SCSI adapter is installed and
working perfectly.

Adaptec has a couple of PCMCIA SCSI cards that are supposed to work under
Vista. Were it not for the fact that Vuescan has no trouble with the
adapter, I'd try one of those.

That's a good idea -- I'll try that (though I have another WIA device -- a
Canon 10D camera).

I'm glad you have a solution but the problems with USB to XXX adapters
are widespread. XP showed my Nokia cable as installed but the PC -
Phone connection did not work.

PCMCIA to SCSI adapters are so expensive it would almost certainly be
cheaper to buy a new scanner .....
