Scanner software

Harry

My HP scanner (Scanjet 7650) uses a program called HP Director, which is
essential for scannung documents and which I am unable to install in Vista
Business. The Vista driver for this scanner is available, but the scanning
software can not be installed, although it worked fine under Win XP Prof.
The HP site does not contain any Vista updates.
Is there some way to install the program in Vista?

Your help would be appreciated.
Peter.

No way that I know of..

I have a HP Officejet 6110 all-in-one that also used HP Director.
And, since Vista Home Premium does not include any scan & fax software, I
purchased
Vuescan for scanning.

Probably not but chances are some other application would work...

If your application was OCR...then you'd need another OCR app known to work
with Vista...
otherwise...
any application with importing functions would do the job.
I've used the free program IrFanview to get non-supported scanners working
(but have not tested it with Vista yet)

I have a similar problem with my now-ancient, but still usable, HP ScanJet
4c. Vuescan is a standalone program that installs its own drivers and
probably has a driver for your software. I installed Vuescan on my Vista
Business system and it works great with my old HP scanner. The only
downside is that I can only scan from within the program -- I can't use the
scanner under things like Word and Photoshop. Still, it's better than
trashing an otherwise-perfectly good scanner.

Try this,

In your install EXE, click Properties, Compatibility and check Win XP
compatibility.

Maybe you can get lucky.

if you decide to purchase another application, Paperport is hard to beat

Paperport is hard to beat

I wonder if it requires a scanner that is recognized in Fax and
Scanners?

From their How To configurre a scanner:

<< Open the Windows system Control Panel and choose Scanners and
Cameras.
Select the scanning device to be used and select Properties. >>

This would seem to preclude scanners that are not recognized by Windows
WIA which may be the problem for Harry?

I'd clean forgotten that Irfanview can run a scan!

It works fine with VISTA -- I just did a test -- but does it only work with
TWAIN connected scanners?

If you've seen other posts of mine, you'll know that I have my old HP SJ5P
working under VISTA using the very old HP Deskscan 2.9 software that
communicates via TWAIN.

Was the problem literally with installing it or with running it? Did
you get any error messages when installing?

If it's with installing then try it again but instead of autoplaying
the installation find the autorun.exe file on the media, right mouse
click on it and select Run as Administrator.

If it installs but won't run then I wonder if you have run into a
conflict with IE7 that apparently existed with XP.

Re: HP Photo and Imaging Director Hates IE7

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Click (or double-click) on the Director Icon like you normally do to
run it... the program is starting, but hiding.

After a second or two, hit <ALT><Space> on the keyboard. That will
"pop-up" a dialog box... click "Minimize" (may have to click it twice).
You will then see the Director icon appear in the taskbar. Click the
taskbar Director button and the program will then come up and work
normally.

OR

put the following text in a .txt file with Notepad and save as a .js
file, give it any name, put file somewhere on your pc and change the
target for your HP Director icon so that it goes to the .js file. HP
Director should now open normally although larger box than usual!

var WshShell = new ActiveXObject("WScript.Shell");
var dirfile="C:\\Program Files\\Hewlett-Packard\\Digital
Imaging\\bin\\Hpqdirec.exe";
var oExec = WshShell.Exec(dirfile);
WScript.Sleep(3000);
WshShell.SendKeys("%( )"); //equivalent of Alt+spacebar
WshShell.SendKeys("nn"); //equivalent of click minimize twice
oExec = WshShell.Exec(dirfile);

You might be able to adapt that script if the manual technique works.

Good luck
I managed to install it in the "compatibility mode", however it will not
run. The program is blocked, Vista tries to find a solution and eventually
it tells me "to contact HP" HP however is not particularly keen to upgrade
software for their equipment. They are primarily interested in the customer
buying new Vista compatible hardware.
Thx very much for your help

The program is blocked,

Firstly, HP on their website do indicate they are working on a VISTA
version of their Director software which makes sense since it is used
with many of their devices and unlike with printers and scanners they
cannot just say buy a new one!

Secondly, I've never had VISTA refuse to run anything I've installed so
I don't know what is behind that blocking but I just asked HELP about
[program is blocked] and it told me the following:

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Run or remove blocked startup programs

User Account Control prevents programs that require permission or an
administrator password from running automatically when Windows starts.
If a program is blocked, you'll see a message in the notification area
that says some startup programs need permission to run. You can run a
blocked program, remove blocked programs from startup, or ignore the
notification.

To run a blocked program
Right-click the Blocked startup programs icon in the notification area.

Click Run blocked program, and then click the name of the program you
want to run. If you are prompted for an administrator password or
confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Note
You'll need to repeat these steps each time you want to run the program
after starting Windows.

To remove a blocked program from startup
You can remove a blocked program from startup so that it won't try to
run automatically each time you start Windows. Removing the program
from startup won't remove the program from your computer.

Right-click the Blocked startup programs icon in the notification area.

Click Show or remove blocked startup programs.

Notes
If a program that you want to run at startup is being blocked, check
the publisher's website to see if there is an updated version of the
program available that doesn't require permission or an administrator
password to run.

Removing a program from startup might affect other users of this
computer.

You might want to study this and also look up about Permissions and
Taking ownership. Others here can help you more on this than I can but
I suspect that there is a temporary answer.

For example, you succeeded in installing by using compatibility mode --
have you checked to see if that is inherited by the application itself?
Right mouse click on its exe files and check compatibility -- set it to
XP if it is not already.

Have you checked and extended to the maximum the permissions of the
account you log on with?

Hope some of that helps.

"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has
malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."

I'm sorry it has not worked. I only had experience with the scsi
connected SJ5P and I don't know if it can work with USB.

There is one thing you could try and that is to disable Windows Image
Acquisition (WIA) in Services and then reboot and see if that helps.

I had to do this the first time in Windows 2000 and then the scanner
was recognized. I think this may be because otherwise WIA grabs the
connection first and so far as I can tell you can re-enable WIA
afterwards if you need it for faxing or for collecting images from your
digital camera.

You can disable this using msconfig which controls startup programs.

If you are using the START in VISTA mode just click on START and in the
search box type msconfig and then press ENTER or whatever you do in
that mode to Run something. If you have START in Classic mode then you
need to get to Run and then type msconfig there.

That should bring you up a Tabbed System Configuration screen so click
on Services, Click on the column heading Service to put them in
alphabetic order and scroll down until you find Windows Image
Acquisition (WIA); uncheck the box against it and OK your way out. Then
reboot and see what happens.

The other thing with USB is the sequence in which you do things -- you
need to install all the software before you plug in the hardware (not
even the USB cable to the scanner with the scanner turned off). So if
you did not do that and the disabling of WIA doesn't do it then try
again but first you will need to uninstall Deskscan in order to start
up clean.

I'm sorry not to be more precise and I hope something works. Please let
us know.

Assuming the scanner isn't working at all or correctly, and you have
installed up to date USB drivers for your particular chipset which
should be or soon will be on your vendor's web site, the next most
logical thing to check into is a malfuncting, multiple or missing
TWAIN drivers. This is what nearly all scanners support and use to
export images from the scanner to either your printer or some other
software like Photoshop.

TWAIN is one of the funnier defacto acronyms and stands for 'Thing
Without Any Intelligent Name' which supports all the major OS's
including Windows, Macs.

Thanks -- this was the reason for trying Deskscan 2.9 since it does
install TWAIN and why I suggested disabling WIA.

Following your line, one could get the Adaptec Windows ASPI Package:

http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/scsi_soft/ASPI/ASPI-4.70/

ASPI Driver package for Windows computers, to support third party
hardware and software. Includes ASPI drivers version 4.x for Windows
98, NT 4, Me, 2000 and XP. Also includes ASPICHK version checking
utility.

The version I use is for XP and comes from:

http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/speed/software_pc/aspi/aspi_471a2_exe.htm

ASPICHK is quite neat.
