General Protection fault - 27 times per new Browser page

M

Michael Lewis

IE 6 6.0.2800.1106IC SP1 - W98SE

For the last few days when I open up IE or move to a new
page (not link), I get a fault with my graphics driver
gfxdrv.drv 27 times (consistently) - I press Ignore that
many times. I also get the problem with popups.

IEXPLORE causes a general protection fault in module
gfxdrv.drv at 0001:00007196

It may ??? be connected to McAfee's latest download of
VirusScan 8 which now contains an ActiveX control or ????

After experiencing this fault, I also find that any
interactive session, like entering into this usegroup, is
very likely to "hang" the computer, needing reboot.

Netscape works Ok

Any ideas?

TIA

Reinstall your graphics drivers - the GPF - general protection fault
was likely generated by a corrupt driver package.

Sort of answering my own question!

I have found the same problem about 16 pages back in this
group with a solution, setting the graphics "accelerator"
back to the second notch from the left (in Settings etc).

This stops the general protection fault BUT IE is still
inclined to "hang".

The graphics driver is the latest version and the checking
process says that it is ok.

What has changed in the last few days to "existing,
unchanged" programs??

Why is slowing down the graphics now necessary (after 5 years)?

Is it McAfee? Is it a virus? Has Microsoft "sneaked" a
buggy change down during an internet session or at some
other time? I am permanently connected with cable.

Please the answer and a logical fix.

TIA
