Game keeps minimising

Guest

I have an Intel Pentium 2.6Ghz computer on XP with 512 MB RAM (39% utilised),
an ATI RADEON 9200 graphics card and more than enough space on my oversized
hard drive to cope.

I seem to be encountering problems playing games on my computer. when
playing games such as Championship manager 4 the game will minimise itself
after 5 mins and switch to the desktop.

I have recently installed service pack 2 and you may recommend re-installing
the game after installing the service pack, however i recently purchased
Football Manager 2005 and upon installing it suffers the same symptoms.

Do i have to download new drivers for my graphics card or is it my memory?

Please help as i am not so fond of paying £800+ for a computer that doesn't
work propery, including Windows Media Centre which i will raise in another
topic.

Thanks

Hi Andy,

Here are some solutions (and workarounds) to deal with the problem where games minimize to the Task Bar.

1. Install and/or play the game using an administrator account.

2. Keyboard software has been known to cause this problem. One player
posted that by un-installing their Trust Silverline Direct Access keyboard
software, all their games worked again without minimizing to the Task Bar.

3. Norton's AntiVirus (Internet Security) can cause the problem as well. The
workaround is to disable the program. To do so, right click it's Tray icon.
One person wrote: "I just went to the Norton Anti-virus options, and turned
off the Liveupdate auto update option. It worked like a charm for me."

4. One person wrote: "I finally found that if I open the command line, cd to
the directory, then type the program name, it works!!!"

5. Yet another workaround is to click the screen after you launch the game.

If the problem persists, please try these additional troubleshooting steps. :)

The most common causes for that problem can be solved with
these few steps. If the problem persists after you've tried these,
please post back and we'll try some more solutions. Good luck! :)

A. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

B. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de to find any
Trojans, Adware, or Spyware which could clog up your system.

C. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

D. Go to the Windows Update site for everything under Critical and
Recommended: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com Some games
require a patch: http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a

E. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:

I also had problem with all my DirectX based games, after SP2 was installed.
None of the them would display the game screens. I was forced to remove the
installed video card drivers and installed the newer ones. You could try
this yourself.

Hi Jimmy,

Thanks for getting back to me with some solutions. I have tried just about
everything you suggested. I have installed the new ATI Catalyst drivers for
my video card. I have turned off autoupdate on the antivirus software, i
have disabled my antivirus and also internet security and tried running it
and the problem still persists. I also updated directx.

Although useful this has still not resolved my problem.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

Andy

Try using adaware by lavasoft and spybot search and destroy. SP2 has a pop
up blocker built in. Most pop up blockers I know of just close the pop ups,
they dont prevent them from running. So if you were to get a pop up while
playing a game, it will minimize the game and you wont see the pop up. So
search for spyware. I had the same issue once. If it is spyware and it gets
bad enough you might have to reformat.
