FTP from "My Network Places" to server?

D

David Seguin

I realize this isn't strictly a FrontPage 2003 question, but I'm not too
sure where else I should ask it.

I manage a 1000 page website with FP 2003. The staging server has FP
extensions, but the production server does not, so I use FTP to move the
files from stg to prod.

As you are probably aware, this is a buggy process. Until now this hasn't
been a large issue, as I'm the only one working on the site, and I know what
is where and where things should be.

But soon I will have 3 other people working with me on the site, and FP 2003
has a nasty habit of not recognizing the work they've done and uploaded.

I thought a good solution might be to use FP to work on the site and use an
FTP client to ftp from stg to prod. Logically, I should be able to use the
ftp client to open the site in "My Network Places" and then ftp to the
production server. But when I try it, the FTP client has a hard time
figuring out where "My Network Places" is and throws up and error. I've
tried 3 clients, but can't do it.

Has anyone else ever had this problem, or know of a different solution?

Thanks,

David Seguin

Have you tried opening the site in Internet Explorer using ftp://website.com in IE and then browsing
to the proper folder on the server and then simply dragging and dropping the files in using IE??

Yes, I did try that. With 2 windows open, I can move files from My Network
Places to the prod server (but not the other way around). This isn't a bad
solution, but I'd really like to connect with an FTP client and at least get
some basic synchronization tools, instead of eyeballing every file.

Don't do it from my network places. have the remote opened in IE and the local folder opened in
Windows. Not the network folder though.

As for the second part, did you try sub folders and just have each person only access "their"
folder??

You might be able to solve your problem by use FP's FTP mode to publish to the production server.
