Frontpage hosting problems

Martyn

Thanks Stefan Rusynko for your help.

My web site host say they have FP Server Extensions - but they ask me to
upload by FTP.

Problem is - I get a message saying something like "Could not find a web
server at port 21 " (I cannot cut and paste the message).

I have read the MS articles - but nothing seems to fit this. FP does update
the web site by FTP - but the program does not show it.

Could this be something to do with ZoneAlarm on my computer?

If your site has the FP extensions, and you host tells you to use FTP, it is time to find another
web host, as they do not have a clue as to how the FP extensions work and any functions or features
you add to your site that required the run-time FP extensions will not work when uploaded via any
method other than the via FP's http publishing mode.

When the FP extensions are installed, you need to use File Menu | Publish Web / Site and enter the
destination as http://www.yourdomainname.com.

Make sure ZA is set to allow inbound and outbound on Port 80.

Port 21 is the ftp port.
I bet they don't "really" have extensions installed on your web.
What's the URL?

My web site is www.soulwork.net

My host is www.az.pl (In Poland ... I am teaching in Poland)

The hosts seem like a pretty good operation - except for some difficulty
with my horribly bad Polish

I hope it's OK as I paid for a 3-year contract

NO extensions installed on that web, see: www.soulwork.net/_vti_inf.html

Thats probably why they're telling you to use FTP...which probably is not configured correctly either :-(

You really didn't need to get a Polish host because you are in Poland you know? One of my hosts is in my hometown, but the other one is in Canada.

You know ... I'm wading through the ZoneAlarm Help files - Techish is harder
than Polish ... and the link doesn't include HOW to do any of the great
things it suggests.

Do you know how to open ports to allow FTP in ZoneAlarm - I can live
without the server extensions but I must update my site with some
confidence.

Thanks again for you help by the way - I didn't know there were so many
helpful people around.

Using FTP programs
To use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) programs, you may need to make the
following settings adjustments in your FTP client program and in Zone Labs
security software:

a.. Enable passive or PASV mode in your FTP client
This tells the client to use the same port for communication in both
directions. If PASV is not enabled, Zone Labs security software may block
the FTP server's attempt to contact a new port for data transfer.

b.. Add the FTP sites you use to the Trusted Zone

c.. Give Trusted Zone access permission to your FTP client program.

One way is to just Turn Off Zone Alarm and try to upload with FTP.

With it On (try to upload with your ftp) it should Prompt you to Allow or Block or Ask, click Allow and then there's a check box something like; Remember This Setting or Always Allow...something like that...just click that and it will add your FTP program to upload.

I'm far outside my comfort zone here - but that address
http://www.soulwork.net/_vti_inf.html only leads to ...
Not Found
The requested URL /_vti_inf.html was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an
ErrorDocument to handle the request.

................

I will also ask a Polish friend to phone the site techs on Tuesday about the
FP extensions.

The _vti_inf.html is only available on a server/site that has the FP extensions installed, so if the
file is missing, then the extensions are not installed on the server/site.

Can YOU access www.soulwork.net by FTP ... do you get a dialog box? I don't.
.... is the FTP access format:

ftp://www.soulwork.net/ username password?

I just get "530 Login incorrect no matter how I write it

Can I buy you a beer?

Sounds like a server password problem. Did the host give you a separate un/pw for ftp access?

You may have to "wrestle" with the host again...not only do you NOT have FP extensions like they toldja, but sounds like ftp access is wacked out too.

Beer? Sure...just email it to me !

After a lot of midnight candle I believe I have FP extensions working ...
Still no FTP from my computer, and I don't know why not. At least I could
update my site with FP. And I can think about some forms - til now I focused
on articles about relationship issues.

Strange that the size of my website seemed to near triple following FP
extension enabling. Is that normal?

Rob - thanks a lot for your time and expertise. Anytime you have a
relationship situation - I'll return the favor with pleasure.

FrontPage extensions adds some folders and files to your site. These
are usually small, but if your site is very small the initial
installation (350KB in 8 folders and 27 files for a one page site on
IIS) may be significant, but additions due to subsequent
edits/additions will not be too noticeable.

now that you have the extensions enabled...you should use Publish not ftp.
