Freezing on initial login

I have noted while creating new deployment images for my network that
my development w'station has taken to freezing very early on after
login completes. Explorer windows, Task Man windows, even help bubbles
freeze and only TFS will restart the box. This happens after a
(re)boot. After a TFS and log out its OK...

This has occurred with a totally clean install (SP4 disk) today. I
thought it might be some dirt that had crept into the image builds or
even something nasty lurking in my login identity. Of course, it could
be a hardware failure and I think it probably is - but I post this to
find out if anyone has seen this kind of behaviour before and what
might have been found to cause it.

Any ideas?

is the station a domain member? does it do the same if in safe mode to local
machine? try to browse the network in safe mode if you cant there. try
pinging the ad server. If not a domain member look at user profiles. create
another user and see if it acts the same.
