Windows XP Professional SP2

One of my buddies was surfing on my computer this morning (who knows where)
and now my computer will not boot properly.

I turn it on, I watch it boot to Windows, I see the login screen, but once
the screen is presented, where I should be able to click on the username,
enter my password, and proceed to Windows, my computer no longer responds to
the mouse or the keyboard. I can move my mouse, but the arrow on the screen
doesn't move. I can press my numlock, capslock, or scrolllock keys and the
LEDs will light up, but the computer will not respond to the keyboard. At
this point, my only way out is to hold my power button until the system turns
off.

Now, I can boot into safe mode with no issues or errors, but that's about it.

Any ideas out there?

Thanx.

- Boot into Safe Mode, then use System Restore to return Windows
to a point well before your buddy clobbered it.
- Lock your computer so that your buddy can no longer use it.
What sort of a buddy is he, anyway?

Okay...he says he only visited myspace and nothing else. Of course, that
isn't exactly a sigh of relief.

I've tried several restores to previous points and it isn't making any
difference. I'm still left with the frozen login screen.

Any other ideas?

Oh yes, he's an "unlimited supplier of free beer" kinda buddy.

Thanx again.

Machines that boot fine into Safe Mode but fail when booting into
Normal Mode do so because something loads in Normal Mode
that does not load in Safe Mode. To isolate the culprit, you need
to run msconfig.exe and disable each and every task under the
Startup tab. Now bring them back one or two at the time until
you have found the rogue task.

And go easy with the free beer while you're at it!
