Go to Start > run and type 'winword.exe /a'
(without the quotation marks and noting the space between the e and
the forward slash)
If word starts OK then you have a problem with a third-party add-in.
Look at Word's start up folder and move third-party applications to
another folder.
Another thing you can do is locate the Normal.dot template and rename
it to Normal.old, then try to start Word.
