Free UpGrade Coupon (Dell)

I just purchased a Dell notebook in October, after talking to
several reps at Dell and being told MS would not release Vista
until mid-next year. I missed the deadline by a matter of days
(even though Dell has still not gotten back to me about service
problem I emailed them on 3 times already).

Needless to say, I purchased all the bells and whistles, and am
now stuck with a very expensive machine that will be obsolete by
1/1/2007.

Is there anything Microsoft can do to make this right?

No, why should they? You should talk to Dell.

become obsolete on 1/1/2007? If you cannot talk *Dell* into a
"free" upgrade based on your allegation that you were mislead,
you'll just have to purchase a Vista license.

Or, better yet, the OP could continue to run XP. There's really
nothing wrong with it, it will do what need doing and will be supported
probably longer than the notebook will last as hardware seems to become
obsolete much faster than OSs do.

That's the chance one takes when buying a new computer. I got a
Dell XPS 400 a few months ago... got a 19" analog LCD for "free."
Next week? Digital 19" for "free."

C'est la vie.

Agreed, my new Compaq notebook was purchased about a week before
HP/Compaq came out with a Vista upgrade! No problem to me, it works
with XP home and does what I need it to do. I can get Vista for free
through the MSDN program and when I do, the notebook will continue to
be running XP home which works so.... why change?

But that's just it. I did do the research and everything I seen
said before Christmas 2006. Dell negated this, or at least three
of their reps did. So, I ask, if you were about to purchase, who
or what would you believe--a few web pages which are usually
redundant, or Dell?

Again I have to ask why you think Microsoft can/will/should do anything
about this? From the above, it seems you agree with most here that the
problem is entirely Dell's.

I hope you get it resolved but, really, what will the laptop do with
Vista that it won't do with XP? I don't think Vista would increase the
functionality in any way will it?

Linux updates and changes frequently as well, nothing in the pc
world is static. I would recommend you try Ubuntu or Fedora core 4
if you are not familiar with linux, as they are great for those
new to the 'nix world.

Personal opinion only: I'd add Mandriva to that, it seems very newbie
friendly.

This statement says a lot
"everything I seen said before Christmas 2006. Dell negated this"
How much research?
Why did three Dell sales people, possibly with an agenda to sell you now and
add to their commission overrule the other opinions that had nothing to
gain?

"who or what would you believe"
The majority of my research which would include at least some with nothing
to gain from me.
Or
People who will gain a commission by my purchase.

Perhaps the pages were redundant because they had the most recent and
correct information.
In any case, when there is discrepancies in available data, it is the buyers
responsibility to make whatever effort the buyer feels necessary before the
buyer chooses to spend $.
After the buyer spends the $, some of the buyers options are now gone.

Ask Dell for a refund.
If you can document the issues you had and you are still within the 21 days
after subtracting the time dealing with the issue, you have a better chance.

You didn't buy the software from Microsoft, you bought it from the OEM,
Dell.

Thus it is Dell's responsibility.

If you think Microsoft doesn't care, you are the one mistaken.

If you think Windows changes too fast, moving to Linux is just going to make
you cry.

If you purchased a new 2006 model car, would you
expect an auto dealer to upgrade you to a new 2007
model car at no charge? Use common sense!

If you purchase the *licence* to use a 2006 model car, you may get a
voucher promising you to exchange the 2006 for a 2007 model next year
without extra cost. (We call it leasing;-)
