Free UpGrade Coupon (Dell)

I just purchased a Dell notebook in October, after talking to several reps at
Dell and being told MS would not release Vista until mid-next year. I missed
the deadline by a matter of days (even though Dell has still not gotten back
to me about service problem I emailed them on 3 times already).

Needless to say, I purchased all the bells and whistles, and am now stuck
with a very expensive machine that will be obsolete by 1/1/2007.

Is there anything Microsoft can do to make this right?

If you purchased the machine before the Upgrade program started then the
answer is no.

If Dell won't help, at least it won't be obsolete until 1-30 and then
Microsoft will let you buy an upgrade version for about $100 less than the
full version.
Good luck with Dell

We're talking a matter of days here guys.

This is extremely unfair since people who purchase 1-2 weeks later not only
were able to purchase at a big discount, but will also be eligible for free
upgrade.

Who do I need to write to to persuade that maybe some exceptions should be
made to this policy?

I feel like a was snookered by Dell and Microsoft.

Yeah, well I voted a straight democratic ticket to stop this type of nonsense
in politics; I might just install Linux after I change my Road Runner Account
for new Verizon digital. The thing is there just is no more loyalty by these
big companies, so how can they expect it from their customers?

I tried the new Office beta--uninstalled it and installed Open Office.
That's another major marketing mistake US Corps are making--giving us what
they want--not what we want.

I guess I'm confused. The announced public release date for Vista is January
31st, 2007, IIRC. Are you sure the "Dell reps" told you mid-2007? Did you do
any independent research to check what you were told?

If they did tell you that, and you feel you were mislead, your issue is with
Dell, not Microsoft. However, I doubt you'll get very far based on sales rep
puffing, as their statements were not placed in your sales contract,
correct?

If you did purchase "a very expensive machine", why would it become obsolete
on 1/1/2007? If you cannot talk *Dell* into a "free" upgrade based on your
allegation that you were mislead, you'll just have to purchase a Vista
license.

If you computer is less than 30 days old you can return it. Then purchase a
new computer that has the free upgrade.

Microsoft had nothing to do with this, your beef is with Dell and their
policies. Call them and tell them you are returning the machine for a full
refund unless they offer the upgrade as it is still under warranty. If they
refuse, then follow through.

I would phone Dell customer service and complain and complain and ask to
talk to each person's supervisor and complain some more, until someone
finally offers something sufficient to make me feel better and shut me
up. Then I would go through it all again, if they don't follow through
on the offer when they say they will.

Don't guess so. I think you would be better off hitting up your mommy than
waiting for Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi to bail you out. However Lois Capps
did get a free tattoo removal program funded, so maybe you could contact
her.

Not so. Dell's return policy is 21 days.

Not sure if this is allowed in NY though. Doesn't matter anyway. They kept
me hanging with service issue for just about a month now.

Back in October, MS announced Vista would be delayed. Dell reps told me it
would be more like July than January. Research really doesn't mean anything
now days. They'll lie to you as they see fit, and then lie about lying to
you in the first place.

Yep. But what a waste of time. Kinda of makes you think about that old
slogan: I should have bought a Gateway . . . err . . . or was it a Compaq?

I'd disagree. MS set the date for honoring upgrades, waffled on the release,
etc. They are as much to blame as Dell, if not more so.

But my guess is that you'd get some results if you bitched enough over
the phone to enough Dell personnel. They would really rather leave you
happy with your purchase (because you talk to other potential Dell
customers), and giving in to your request doesn't obligate them to give
the same thing to other customers who happen to be in the same boat but
haven't bothered to complain.

That's the chance one takes when buying a new computer. I got a Dell XPS 400
a few months ago... got a 19" analog LCD for "free." Next week? Digital 19"
for "free."

C'est la vie.
