free online virus scanner recommend ?

L

Loveembirds

can anyone guide me to a great free online virus scanner ?
Am using Avast but want to check out my computer via another service also.
Have webroot spysweeper and it just added antivirus onto my service for free.
If I download the virus definitions part and run it, should I temporarily
shut down or remove avast totally before trying the webroot spysweeper
antivirus program ?

I've tried to use the McAfee free online virus scanner but it just is not
loading for me for some reason .

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving to all !

You do not want Spysweeper's anti-virus component and Avast installed and
loading at boot. If you've not purchased Spysweeper (w/anti-virus),
uninstall it ASAP.

Something tells me you've already got a hijackware problem and that the
infection may have disabled Avast and blocking you from running online
scans...

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjunction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

You should have only one fully installed anti virus application performing both "On
Demand" and "On Access" scanning. If you are using Avast already, stick with it.

However you may supplement a fully installed anti virus application that performs both
"On Demand" and "On Access" scanning with additional "On Demand" scanners and they don't
have to be "Online scanners".

One such ustility is my Multi AV Scanning Tool which provides "On Demand" scanners from;
McAfee, Sophos, Trend Micro and Kaspersky.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.pctip.ch/ds/28400/28470/Multi_AV.exe
or
http://212.98.39.7/ds/28400/28470/Multi_AV.exe

http://www.pctip.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp
or
http://212.98.39.7/downloads/dl/35905.asp

English:
http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/01/09/scan-your-computer-with-multiple-anti-virus-for-free/

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file.

Thank you Bo but the reason I am wanting to do this for when Avast is through
scanning, there are prob. over 200 entries it says it was unable to scan.
Why I don't know so , think an additional scan from another service may be
helpful.

L

Loveembirds

Thank you Robear, yes-all that looks too out of my league for am clueless how
to do the hijack stuff.
I can scan with avast but it does not seem to do a thorough job and the
webroot spysweeper was a legit upgrade for free to me but like I say, I have
not dowloaded the antivirus definitions for it, just have the basic
spysweeper running still.
The McAfee free scan online , not sure about why it won't work, ( never
get the active x thing popping up to approve it so it goes nowhere ) but you
may be right, perhaps I have already been hijacked .
However, will try some of the ones Bruce recommended and see if I can get
anywhere with those . If not then for sure I prob. have a problem.

Thank you Dave,

This too is a bit too technical for me but will try and figure it all out.
You guys are great !

You are already using Avast; just a bit of info about it, and 2 programs you
need to install to try to your computer..
Install, and scan with the other 2 programs.
All info below as to whether you will have to install in Safe Mode with
Networking, or not.
I'd say that you will have to, and also scan in that Mode as well.
Scan with Avast while in that mode, too.

Avast Anti-Virus is XP and Vista compatible (32bit and 64bit Versions),
FREE, auto-updating, and a low resources user of your computer.
And, only have 1(one) Anti-Virus installed / running on your computer at any
one time..
Conflicts may occur if you have more than 1(one).

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

Download, install, and update.

Important re: Safe Mode
If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot
the computer, and go into Safe Mode.
To get into Safe mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow
key to get to Safe Mode from list of options, then hit ENTER.
RESCAN your computer with your Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes and Spybot S & D
while in Safe Mode.

If unable to install above Programs in Normal Mode:
Sometimes Trojans, Viruses, Malware, etc stop you installing and/or updating
Programs to remove them.
If that happens, reboot into Safe Mode with Networking, and install, update
and scan from there.

YW. There are plenty of online anti-virus and anti-malware scans out there.
There isn't one of them that will identify *and* remove all hijackware.
That being said...

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

2. See if you can run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need
be): http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

NB: I would not recommend using the "Full Service" scan you'll find at
onecare.live.com, just the Protection scan.

I've been following this thread and went to the onecare.live site you
suggested. My reading suggests that this "Protection scan" is automated so
that it automatically removes what malware it finds. Does it ask you before
doing so? Is its action reversible? Why do you recommend not using the
"Full Service" and what is that?

A1. You can ask your Windows Live Safety Center scans questions here:

Windows Live OneCare Safety Center Forum
http://boards.live.com/safetyboards/board.aspx?BoardID=225

A2. Primarily because you really don't need your Registry to be "cleaned,"
and if you do so and later find that you need to "undo" the changes made by
the Cleanup scan, you'll go crazy trying to find out how to do it...if you
can do it.

L

Loveembirds

ok, thanks again to you all.

Jeff, I was wondering the same about the onecarelive and the registry
question.
So far I've tried the symantec security check and trend micro house calls,
neither of those would fully download. Panda did fully download and found
nothing.
Now I'm trying onecarelive and it doesn't seem to be fully downloading
either, am on my 3-4th try with it and keep getting an error message to try
later.

I do have and use MBAM and SAS on here in addition to Webroot spysweeper (
as mentioned before) and zone alarm.
I had written here a month or so ago that Avast had found trojans in two
places, I think it was my registry and system restore. I put them in my
virus chest and there they sit for I was not able to " fix" them per avast.
Robear , I think you may be right.
Perhaps the damage has been done preventing me from downloading these other
checks and fixes?!
What about the McAfee remote virus fix they offer, ( can't find good
computer repair help around here) would that be worth a try and would it
take care of registry and restore " bugs"?
