virus scanner failed

I used to have Norton... It was too much of a resource hog for my liking. I
cant go back to mcAffee... too many horrible experiences. I currently have
AVG free edition. It is the low resource program that I like... Except for
the fact that I had to go online to hte Norton Online Scanner in order to
discover that my computer had 5 viruses, and which ones they were. When my
AVG didnt pick anything up, but I was stil getting virus like symptoms, I was
forced to use the online scanner. My question for anyone reading this is....
Which is the BEST, free, low resource hog virus scanner out there?... If you
cant think of any, then inform me of the BEST low resource virus scanner that
you can buy.... much lower than Norton uses... Thanks for your help in
advance.

It may be that the items discovered by the online scan were Trojans /
Malaware and not specifically a virus.
Many AV apps do not find these type of infections. There are specifics apps
designed to detect these.
MS Defender, Adaware and Spybot to name but a few, often reccomended ones.
They are all free

Choosing an AntiVirus app that's both effective and "Light:" on system
loading isn't easy. A year ago or later, I spent months testing/analyzing
all the choices. Personally and Professionally I decided on CA's eTrust
7. That being said, I also recommend running on-line scans from other
vendors as a alternate protection/double-check.
Computer Associates is going through some tough business activities.
I haven't noticed that these problems have filtered down to the actual
effectiveness of their software. Many companies release their latest
offerings during August & September. For now I'm staying with eTrust
but would also consider Nod32 as an alternate choice.
Free products (AV) are OK and I have many customers who cannot
or will not pay for AV. Either AVG or Avast seems to provide minimal
protection - but you get what you pay for.
Whatever you decide, I would agree that avoiding "Home" products
from McAfee and Symantec (Norton) is a wise choice.

Try NOD32 from ESET. It has extremely low utilisation of system resources
and offer very good protection against viruses, worms, adware, spyware and
phishing You can download a 30 days free trial from the website.

Run Linux and you won't have to worry about viruses. You can get a free
distro easily and installation is easier than Windows.

I dont know if I will get a reply but.... here goes nothing....
About NOD32, I will give it a try (I had two recomendations for it here, and
one person that didnt say it was BAD)... But one quetion... Does it find the
problems such as Downloader, Zango, and others like them?
About Linux: I have thought about it. I wouldnt be able to make the swith
though. Too many problems with compatability with my programs. If there was a
more user friendly way to setup a dual-boot for my computer with Linux and
Windows, I would probably set it up in a flash, but I havent heard of one yet.

Thanks for your help... Both provided and to be provided.

Have you understood that there are AV apps, designed primarily to
block/clean virus and there are malaware apps designed specifically for
this. The two are completely different and both are required to be installed

What can I say about Nod is that: since I use it, already one year now, I
had no infection. But of course, along AV software there should be
appropriate protection against spyware/malware (I use windows defender-it's
free and quite good), and a very good Firewall. (forget about windows sp2
firewall..)
About Linux.. let's not forget that the most destructive virus in the
history of computing since "Brain" 20 years ago (based on percentage of
machines infected) occurred on a Unix box...

And what virus would that be?
