FP2003 Publish issue - FP could not parse server response

G

Guest

When I attempt to publish my site I get an error message "The server sent a
response which Front Page could not parse . . . ". This occurs after the
program compares the local and remote file lists and identifies the file to
publish. It happens when I try to publish Local to Remote or Synchronize. I
am also able to publish selected files, just not the site.

I am changing local computers while using the same server. The original
computer does not have this problem. On the new computer I created a blank
web site and then copied the folders and files for the existing site into the
blank web. I then published the remote files to the new local site without
apparent problem (except the server kept dropping the connection).

Any help with this issue will be most appreciated.

I appreciate this prompt substantive response. Unfortunately I'm aftaid that
FP Cleaner did not do the trick. It found no "temp" files and deleted 6
*.web files. I attempted to publish the site from Local to Remote and got
the same message about not parsing server responses. Ugh! Any further
thoughts? Thanks.

Your web may just be too big for the server. In theory, there is no
limit to the size of a FrontPage website, however in practice there is a
limit dictated by:

Server hardware - available RAM, Processor(s), disc space etc.

The load on the server - how many web sites are running, and how busy
they are.

The internet connection - dialup will be more problematic than 8Mb
broadband.

Number of files in each folder in your web site - the more files in one
folder, the more RAM space required for buffers on the server.

Splitting the web into subwebs may reduce some of these factors and
allow each individual subweb to be published.

I had this exact problem with a website that had only 2.5MB of files out
of 100MB available. Publishing at 5am Sunday morning usually worked,
upgrading the server totally cured the problem.

Are there any single files over 1 MB
and if you have any thumbs.db file in either site delete them
- also try publishing by turning off your firewall software

Thanks for all the posts. I am anxious to solve this problem because I need
to hand the webmaster duties over to the new person for our non-profit. I'd
like to retire with the site in full working condition.

I have talked with GoDaddy, the server, and they say everything looks good
from their end. I will call again and discuss repair/reinstal extensions and
server health check.

Also I do have files that are more than 1MB. This website is for a high
school jazz music program and so we have music files that are more than a MB.
While I know I can reduce the size of a .jpg file, I would not want to
eliminate music from this site.

But, I doubt that it is a server issue, or a website size issue. I am still
able to publish the site with no errors from my desktop computer. I am
having problems with the same site and software from my successor's laptop.
There must be a different setting on the laptop that is getting in the way.

I tried disabling the firewall but still generated the problem publishing.
Maybe Front Page is too delicate.

FrontPage is not too delicate. It's GoDaddy.
You need to read the countless posts in the FP newsgroups from people who
have GoDaddy problems with Extensions, etc.

I have 34 thumbs.db files. Will I cause problems for the site if I delete
them? Will they regenerate on the server? Thanks.

I appreciate your concern about GoDaddy and your confidence in FrontPage. I
just note that this particular problem I'm having has apparently been
prevalent with different servers judging by the results of a Google search on
this error message. I reserve judgement on FrontPage. Thanks.

Delete them from within FrontPage folder view. They will definitely cause problems.
Then set Windows to "not" create the thumbs.db in folders with images.

Thanks. I have deleted the thumb.db files from both local and remote
versions of the website. I also had GoDaddy reinstall FP Extensions. Sadly
I'm still getting the error. No improvement. Can't think what else to do.

Appreciate the help, though.

The limit needs to be changed by your host (if they will do it)
The Default is set to 1 MB anonymous uploads.
The command that they run on the server that will increase the anonymous
upload size for a given web site (for all ports) is as follows :
owsadm -o setproperty -pn vti_maxuploadcontentlength -pv 3000000
The Owsadm.exe can be found at C:\Program files\common files\Microsoft
Shared\Web server extensions\50\bin folder. (The size at the end of the line is in bytes. )

Or in FP move all your large Media files to a separate folder named say "Media"
- so FP will change the links
Convert that folder to a subweb and do not publish subwebs or open that subweb online in FP again
Use a 3rd party FTP (or a host provided tool) to upload all the media files to that folder
