FOUND.000, etc.

on a machine with XP home, upgraded from ME, running FAT32,
there are a slew of hidden folders in C:\ named FOUND.000,
FOUND.001, etc. What made these folders? Are these
necessary, or can i delete them?

They aren't really necessary, they're the results from running CHKDSK. When
it finds corrupted data it places it in this directory, usually starting
with FILE0000.CHK, FILE0001.CHK, etc. Unless you've lost some data and are
attempting data recovery you can delete them.
