Unusual folders under C:\

Under Local Drive C is a folder named something like
7314735611d06e03064ee29a, and under that is single file named
msxml4-KB927978-enu.log --- is that a needed folder & file?

Also, under Local Drive C is a folder named Config.Msi, and there is no file
in the folder -- is that a needed folder?

Also, under Local Drive C is a folder named FOUND.000, there are a number of
files like file0001.chk -- what about this one?

Thanks.

In order...

"7314735611d06e03064ee29a" - Microsoft Update. If you can delete it - it is
safe to delete.

"Config.Msi" - Microsoft Update. If you can delete it - it is safe to
delete.

"FOUND.000" - means CHKDSK found orphaned files/corruption and put these
file contents into the .chk files you see. Suggestion: get the hard disk
drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility from the hard disk drive
manufacturer's web site and - after backing up your important data - test
the hard disk drive in your system.

That's an indication of a failed update -KB927978.

Check whether the update failed or was subsequentally successful.

Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your Windows up- to-date with
Windows Update, Review your Update History and click on the Failed Icon
(if any) in the Status Column. What does it say for the failed update??

An indication that chkdsk has found bad sectors on the hard disk. Chkdsk
has partially recovered damaged files and this is one file of those
files. You can open the file using Notepad but usually they are not
worth retaining. Make sure your hard disk is not in the process of
failing.

Hope this helps.

Assuming Automatic Updates is enabled, wait a week or so then check to see
if it's still there.

I also found that the free Belarc Advisor will tell you specifically what updates failed and a myriad of other
bits of cpu info on your machine.

Lots of detailed info for free, I think.
